ROME – Proposed American duties on EU exports prompted a successful appeal from wine industry supply chain leaders in Italy, after asking for a diplomatic solution in December 2019, according to the Italian Union of Wines.

  Meetings between Italian and America officials were held in January to find a solution. “The Foreign Ministry is dedicating great attention to the protection of Italian commercial interests, especially in the relevant areas of the wine sector,” reads a letter reassuring supply chain leaders by the Italian minister for foreign affairs, Luigi Di Maio.

VATICAN CITY – Bed and breakfasts have allegedly been masquerading as religious structures in order to evade fines that have accrued 100 million euros in the past three years, reports Il Fatto Quotidiano.

  Priests and nuns have appealed financial sanctions in 75 per cent of cases, which means that only 17 out of a potential 75 million euros has been collected, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano, who have access to a report from the Court of Audit in Rome.

ROME – The Holy See has denied German press reports that Pope Francis has dismissed Prefect of the Papal Household Archbishop Georg Gaenswein, Vatican sources said on Wednesday.

 Gaenswein, who has been the private secretary of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI since 2003, was reportedly being released from his duties as Prefect of the Papal Household to spend more time with the former pope.

LONDON – Italian Prime Minster Giuseppe Conte met with UK Prime Minster Boris Johnson on Tuesday at the launch of the UN Climate summit COP26, to discuss diplomatic relations between the two countries.

  PM Conte said that 2020 would be a “decisive year” for tackling the climate crisis and that Italy was committed to achieving a greener economy, while also announcing that Milan would host a climate event later in the year. The target of 2050 zero emissions was agreed upon by the two leaders.

  A white-suited figure holding a bowl of rice is shown to be saying, “there's an epidemic of ignorance around, we have to protect ourselves." It is the work of street artist Laika, who is known for having done other murals, such as that of the former Roma football player Daniele De Rossi and Italian politician Matteo Salvini.

ROME – Italian nationals stranded in Wuhan due to the coronavirus lockdown have been returned to Italy, although one national had to remain due to signs of fever, reports Italian health officials. The Italian male, 17, was unable to board when pre-flight medical checks by local authorities revealed flu-like symptoms. He has been taken to a Chinese hospital and is being monitored by the Italian embassy, according to La Repubblica.
