Napoli considering hiring more Georgian players

Gabriel Sigua

NAPLES – First division Napoli is scheming to acquire some more Georgian players to join the club, Il Mattino of Naples newspaper reported Monday. Georgian virtuoso Khvicha Kvaratskhelia spearheaded Napoli’s victory in the Serie A cup in 2023, earning the nickname “Kvaradona” after Naples’ Argentinian legend Diego Maradona. He is seen as a great investment by club managers who paid a mere 10 million euros for him while today he is worth at least 80 million euros, Il Mattino said.

Among those being considered in Naples are Gabriel Sigua, the 19-year-old midfielder who plays for Swiss Superleague club Basel as well as the Georgian national team.

Also in the sites of the Napoli talent scouts is Irakli Azarovi, 22, who plays for Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk.

Georges Mikautadze, the Georgian striker who has scored 34 goals for Metz, is another candidate for Napoli, Il Mattino reported.

Already in Italy and ripe for transfer is Saba Sazonov, 21, playing for Torino.

Georgian defender Gia Grigalava has emerged as another potential target for Napoli. With his commanding presence in defense and ability to read the game, Grigalava could provide the much-needed stability to Napoli's backline.

While the prospect of acquiring Georgian talent holds promise, it also presents its set of challenges. Adapting to the tactical demands of Serie A and the rigours of Italian football would require a period of adjustment for any incoming player.

Napoli's interest in acquiring Georgian teammates to accompany Khvicha Kvaratskhelia is a strategic move aimed at strengthening their squad and tapping into Georgia's burgeoning footballing talent, football pundits say.
