 LONDON – Jeremy Irons, Maggie Smith and Ian McKellen are among the luminaries celebrating the life and work of Italian film director Franco Zeffirelli at a special commemorative event in London on Sunday. 

 Some 100 friends and collaborators gathered at the Italian Embassy at Grosvenor Square to share their memories of the famed auteur, who died in Rome last June, aged 96.

 In a career spanning more than 60 years, Zeffirelli was nominated for an Academy Award for his 1968 silver screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.

ROME – Lazio dispatched Inter Milan with a 2-1 victory on Sunday, and displayed the physical and mental attributes needed to win Serie A for the first time in 20 years.

   In a highly tactical performance, Lazio pressurised Inter throughout a goalless first half, but fell behind when Inter struck through a volley by Ashley Young. The ball fell helpfully at the ex-Manchester United player's feet, and he thumped in his first goal for Inter Milan on the full.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis’ ‘Dear Amazon’ papal document in relation to requests from the Amazon Synod, has been heavily criticised by the leading Catholic reformist movement ‘We Are Church – International’ (WAC-I). In a press release on Thursday entitled ‘Pope’s Response to Amazon Synod Fails to Respond to Church Members’ Needs’, the group has said that the response shows that “the Roman Catholic hierarchy lacks the courage and vision needed to address the real needs of the world and its people.”

 ROME – Italy’s far-right League leader, Matteo Salvini, has denied he was planning to host an event in Liverpool but has invited the mayor of the city, who accused him of being fascist, to Milan for "polenta and osso buco".

 The former Interior Minister was responding to reports that his brand of xenophobic politics was not welcome in Liverpool.
