VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis expressed his “sadness and pain” Sunday at the terrorist attacks in Sri Lanka that killed circa 300 Christians at churches across the island where they were celebrating Easter.

 “I learned with sadness and pain of the news of serious attacks that today on Easter Day brought mourning and pain to some churches and other meetings places in Sri Lanka,” the pontiff said in his Easter message.

ROME - Greta Thunberg was amongst the thousands of young Italians to congregate in Piazza del Popolo for a Fridays For Future climate change rally.

 Thunberg was amongst the impassioned speakers and musicians to take to the stage in defence of the environment and address the 10,000 estimated to be in attendance.

 Opening to the sound of “We are saving the planet alongside Greta” chants, Thunberg began a passionate speech praising the hard work of those in Italy and across the world who had joined her in campaigning for change.

ROME – Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi will likely be suing former head of the city’s trash management company Lorenzo Bagnacani, official sources reported on Friday.

Legal actions come after Italian weekly magazine ‘L’Espresso’ published a series of conversations between the mayor and the former CEO, in which Raggi demands the accounts of the waste company to be manipulated to hide credits from cemetery waste management services.

Bagnacani said he was fired after he refused to give in to the mayor’s intentions, as reported in the wiretaps release by the magazine.

ROME - As many as 80 tonnes of airplane fuel were dumped over a protected marine area off the Ligurian coast by an Alitalia flight, drawing strong criticism nationwide.

 The Alitalia airplane, which was on route to Tokyo from Milan Malpensa, reported mechanical issues affecting its engines mere minutes after taking off.

 Following fuel dumping procedure, the aircraft discarded excess kerosene above the sea as the pilot took measures to avoid possible malfunctions.

ROME - Italian president Sergio Mattarella Friday stated that “the wind of sovereignism would not threaten the existence of the European Union,” in an interview with famed French magazine ‘La Revue de Politique Internationale’.

 “There are a large number of countries that are in unprecedented positions. But I do not believe that these changes can affect the workings of the Parliament, the Commission and the European Council, and even less threaten the existence of the Union,” Mattarella declared.

ROME - Napoli were knocked out of the Europa League quarter-finals by Arsenal on Thursday night, losing against the English side for a second time in a week following another limp performance.

 Carlo Ancelotti’s men went into the game off the back of a 2-0 first leg defeat. However, given Arsenal’s dismal recent form on the road, Ancelotti and his players knew they were still in with a shot of taking something from the tie.
