ROME - UK Ambassador to Italy hosted a delegation of the British and Italian cultural elite on Tuesday evening, official sources report.

HM Ambassador Jill Morris welcomed 200 distinguished guests at her Villa Wolkonsky official residence. The event, organized by the British Council, kicked off a series of events aimed at strengthening the bilateral relations between Italy and the United Kingdom. The appointments are a build-up for the bilateral UK-IT Season of Culture, expected to commence in 2020.

VATICAN CITY - The Holy See expressed their “shock and sadness” as Paris’ famed cathedral Notre Dame was Monday devastated by a fire.

 The Vatican Press Office stated that Pope Francis was in solidarity with the people of France in such a moment of national sorrow.

 "The pope is close to France, he is praying for French Catholics and for the people of Paris in face of the terrible fire which has ravaged Notre-Dame cathedral," tweeted Alessandro Gisotti, the head of the Vatican Press Office.

REGGIO CALABRIA - Three men in their twenties have been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a teenage girl on a beach in Calabria, police sources have revealed.

 The perpetrators are believed to have taken advantage of the 18-year-old girl’s inebriated state, leading the girl out of a nightclub they were in to a nearby public beach.

ROME - In the run up to May's European elections, the European sea rescue organisation SOS MEDITERRANEE has appealed to election candidates to stop the progressive erosion of maritime and international law in the Mediterranean region.

 Through a European-wide call to action, all candidates of the future parliament were encouraged to insist on compliance with maritime law in the new legislative period.

BOLOGNA - On a mild April morning, the Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi airport saw the landing of an Embraer 190 aircraft, with registration OH-LKE, of the Finnish flag airline Finnair.

 This was the first ever scheduled flight to connect the Finnish capital Helsinki with Bologna. The event was celebrated on arrival with a ceremony attended by passengers, crew and representatives of the Bologna airport.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis has urged young people not to become slaves to their mobile phones, sources from the Holy See have revealed.

 “Free yourselves from dependence on the mobile phone, it is like a drug,” the pope told students from Rome’s Visconti High School, who met with him at the Vatican on Saturday.

  In his address, the pope warned against the new “slavery” generated by modern technologies.
