VALLETTA – A rescue ship carrying 65 Libyan migrants Sunday night landed in Malta, after being turned away from Italy. The Alan Kurdi, owned by German NGO Sea Eye, had been heading towards Lampedusa but changed course Saturday, reported Il Fatto Quotidiano.

PARIS – The online campaign group SumOfUS has reports that AXA, a French multinational insurance company, invests in banned weapons manufacturers and companies which finance illegal Israeli settlements. The NGO accuses the Paris-based firm of complicity in war crimes, in a new report.

 The report, entitled “AXA: Financing War Crimes,” details the financial contributions of the global insurance company to companies which are involved in the illegal Israeli occupation of Palestinian territory and in the production of banned weapons.

ROME - The Italian government has banned a ship that has rescued 54 migrants from a rubber dinghy in distress 12 miles off the coast of Lampedusa, from approaching the island. However Malta has offered a place to dock but the crew aboard the Alex ship of NGO Mediterranea Saving Humans said the migrants were unable to make the trip from Libyan to Maltese waters.

NAPLES – French American chef Michael Roper has finished second behind Raffaele Barresi of Pasticceria Capparelli in Naples, in the 2nd San Gennà … un Dolce per San Gennaro pastry competition.

 Held at the Renaissance Naples Hotel on Monday, the contest saw seven chefs face off in a challenge to create a dessert in homage to San Gennaro, the patron saint of Naples.

ROME – President Vladimir Putin has arrived in Rome, landing at Fiumicino airport at 12.58 on Thursday. Welcoming the Kremlin Leader at the airport were Italian ambassador to the Russian Federation Pasquale Terracciano, head of the Diplomatic Protocol of the Republic Ingio Lambertini, Adr Managing Director Ugo de Carolis, and a delegation from the Holy See.

 President Putin stepped into the luxurious Aurus Senat, an armoured “made in Russia” limousine, making his way to the Vatican in a convoy of around 30 cars.

ROME – Italy has experienced population decline for the first time in 90 years and, according to a new report, two factors are to blame: fewer women having babies and more Italians abandoning their country.

 Released by Istat, the report reveals the Italian population fell to 55,104,000 in 2018: that’s 235,000 less than the previous year (-0.4%). From 2014 to 2018, the population decreased by 677 thousand people: a loss equivalent to the disappearance of a city the size of Palermo.
