COSENZA – The Guardia di Finanza of Cosenza have arrested 52 people in connection with 14 seized farms where illegally employed foreign workers were subject to mistreatment, 12 of which were in the forrest region of Basilicata, and two of which were in the province of Cosenza, according to judicial sources. An operation on Wednesday morning involving over 300 officers occured after the request of the prosecutor Flavio Serracchiani, on the basis of alleged crimes aimed at worker exploitation and the facilitation of illegal immigration.

ROME – Hundreds of Italian young people added their voice to the thousands upon thousands protesting the murder of George Floyd and to all those who have lost their lives as a result of police racism and brutality. The death of George Floyd on May. 25 at the hands of police in Minnesota marks a turning point in race relations, and the two hour protest in Rome showed how the young people of Italy are ready to stand in solidarity with all those who have suffered from racism.

ROME – The Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luigi Di Maio, has said that assessments are being made on the agreed sale of two frigates, the ‘Spartaco Schergat’ and the ‘Emilio Bianchi’, to be sold to Egypt as part of a nine billion euro contract, according to diplomatic sources. Eight frigates have already been sold to Egypt by Italy, for an estimated total value of over one billion euros as part of an even wider military contract worth up to 11 billion euros, reports Il Fatto Quotidiano.

VALLETTA – A private vessels stranded outside Maltese territorial waters devolved into chaos as migrants armed with knives from the kitchens threatened to detonate a gas cylinder and kidnap crew members, the Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela revealed on live broadcast. The authorities received a request for help on Saturday, and were given "half an hour to act or they would kidnap the crew," said PM Abela.

ANACAPRI – Villa San Michele have invited visitors back after three months of lockdown due to the Corona virus epidemic in Italy. The opening of the beautiful house museum in a small town at the top of the island of Capri, which is meant to contribute to get the tourism season started on the island. As of June 12, visitors will have a unique chance to experience Capri without mass tourism this summer. In accordance the new regulations, it is mandatory to book a visit and wear masks that cover mouth and nose. The booking service will open June 8.

BRINDISI – Enel, the Italian energy company operating in over 30 countries worldwide, have begun the process of decarbonisation with the announcement the closure of one of the four coal-fired groups, the Federico II plant, in the region of Apulia, which will close in 2021, according to a WWF press release. 

  “WWF Italia is pleased to learn that the Ministry of Economic Development has given a favourable opinion on the early closure of Group 2 of the Federico II coal-fired thermoelectric power plant in Brindisi starting from January 1, 2021,” read the press release.
