ROME – The United Kingdom’s decision to leave the EU could be beneficial to Italy’s economy, especially in improving the quality of migration into Italy, according to Italian National Institute for Statistics (ISTAT).

 In a report detailed on Monday in Corriere della Sera, ISTAT argued that “although it is too early to assert on a statistical base, there is an element of novelty appearing for the first time in the international panorama of Europe: Brexit.”

ROME – Tensions will be high in Rome on Saturday as three separate events are planned in the city by far-right and -left groups, according to Il Messaggero.

 From 4pm CasaPound, the neo-fascist political party, will hold a procession from Laurentina station and along Via Sinigaglia before arriving in the Piazza Giuliani e Dalmati. It is part of their Day of Remembrance for victims of the “Foibe,” the name for the killing of Italian civilians and soldiers by Yugoslav partisans in the final two years of World War Two.

ROME - The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) announced that they put together a financing package with the Republic of Tajikistan worth dlrs 39.3 million, in order to “help reduce poverty and stimulate inclusive economic growth in poor rural communities.”

 The “Community-Based Agricultural Support Project” was signed on Thursday by Gilbert F. Houngbo, President of IFAD, and Qahhorzoda Faiziddin Sattor, Tajikistan’s Minister of Finance. It sets out a commitment by IFAD to lend the country dlrs 15.3 million, whilst granting it a further dlrs 15.3 million.

ROME – Virginia Raggi, Rome’s Five Star Movement (M5S) mayor, launched a political attack on the country’s Prime Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, for failing to support Rome in an interview on Thursday with Radio Capitale.

 Raggi claimed that “despite being from Rome, he is not showing any particular benevolence towards his city, the capital.”

ROME – Large sections of the manifesto of Five Star Movement (M5S) are plagiarised, with parts transferred verbatim from Wikipedia, articles and even supporters of rival parties, according to analysis released Thursday by Il Post.

 The electoral plan on M5S website was written on the “Rousseau” platform, the party’s online operating system that allows people to directly contribute to the party’s manifesto, propose law changes and select their candidates in online polls.

ROME – Over the course of two hours on Saturday, Luca Traini injured six people while firing from his vehicle at migrants and Democratic Party (PD) offices in the city of Macerata.

 The event, supposedly in retaliation for the arrest of a Nigerian national from the city on murder charges, has driven the already divisive topic of immigration to the top of the political agenda.  

 Traini’s actions have been seized upon by those on the right, who see Italian fear of immigration as the centrepiece of their electoral success.

ROME – Leonardo, the Italian aerospace, defence and security company, announced on Wednesday that they are expanding in Indonesia.

 The company said they had received two orders for light intermediate AW169 helicopters for corporate use and that they would be making further deliveries this year to the airline Travira and to emergency services in the country.

 The sales mean that Leonardo’s fleet has grown by 100 percent in the last three years in the country. Evidence, the company argued, of “the flexibility of the Leonardo helicopter portfolio.”

 VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis was aware of claims of an alleged cover up of paedophilic abuse in Chile by Bishop Juan Barros as early as 2015, having received a letter from one of the abuse victims, even though he previously denied ever having seen evidence, Italian newspapers reported this week. 

 Barros has been a source of controversy ever since his promotion to Bishop of Osorno in 2015. At the time protestors disrupted his ordination, claiming that he had known of the prolific child abuse by Father Fernando Karadima.
