ROME – Liverpool survived a late scare but a valiant Roma side left themselves too much to do at the Stadio Olimpico, despite a 4-2 victory on the night. The Italians twice came from behind, but the 5-2 drubbing in the first-leg ultimately cost them a place in the Champions League final.

 Expectant Roma fans were welcomed with a vibrant attacking display as Roma sought to claw their way out to the hole they had created at Anfield.

ROME – Chilean-born activists and victims of sexual abuse, Juan Carlos Cruz, James Hamilton and José Andres Murillo, held a conference at the Foreign Press Association on Wednesday about their conversations with Pope Francis on sexual abuse in the clergy.

 It’s the first time that they’ve spoken to the media about their stay in the Santa Marta residence inside the Vatican, which happened over the weekend.

ROME – The course of the Democratic Party hit further turbulence on Wednesday after a website listed the names of its party members, indicating those in favour and those against the formation of a government with the Five Star Movement. The widening divide amongst the PD arrives as the party prepares for internal discussions on its direction.

 The website, senzadime.it, which has taken its name from the pro-Renzi hashtag launched by a section of the PD, has split party members according to their stance on a potential deal with the anti-establishment M5S.

VATICAN CITY – Giacomo Dalla Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto was elected as the new Grand Master of the Sovereign Order of Malta on Wednesday, following a year-long spell as interim leader, the Order said.

 Dalla Torre was elected by the 56 members of the order, commonly known as the Knights of Malta, and will serve as their 80th Grand Master.

 The 73-year-old will now be tasked with heavy reforms to the world’s oldest surviving chivalric order after a stormy ending to the leadership of former Grand Master, Matthew Festing.

MILAN – Almost 1,500 neo-fascists gathered in Via Paladini to remember the Youth Front activist Sergio Ramelli by making a stiff armed Roman salute, officials say.

 After a service at the church of San Nereo and Achilleo in Viale Argonne on Sunday, the procession reached Via Paladini where Ramelli’s tombstone is located.

 The far right gathering responded to the cry “present” with a stiff armed Roman salute, despite fears of possible judicial consequences. This was repeated three times. Flowers were also placed in front of Ramelli’s plaque.

MANTUA – Simone La Terra, an expert mountaineer from Castiglione delle Stiviere, has died climbing the Himalayan peak of Dhaulagiri in Nepal, officials say.

 The 37-year-old was swept off the 8,167-metre mountain by a strong gust of wind on Sunday, while he was in his tent at 6,100 metres above sea level.

 His teammates searched for him by foot, while a rescue helicopter battled against the bad weather higher up the mountain.

MILAN - Inter Milan defender Davide Santon and 24-year-old English girlfriend Chloe Sanderson have both received death threats via social media following Saturday’s defeat against Juventus.

 The 27-year-old former Newcastle United player came on for the last five minutes of the game, replacing captain Mauro Icardi, when Inter were leading 2-1. However, in a turn of events, Juve managed to score two late goals so that they won 3-2.
