ROME – Leonardo, through Leonardo DRS, announced on Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract worth about 80 million dollars to provide the U.S. Army and Marine Corps with additional TROPHY active protection systems. This brings the total funded value of the program to over USD 200 million and will equip several more brigades with Abrams TROPHY.

BRUSSELS – The European Commission appealed to its 28 members on Tuesday to provide a place for the 49 migrants on board Sea Watch and Sea Eye to safely disembark, Il Messaggero reports.

 After meeting with representatives from each of the countries during “constructive discussions,” the Commission reported that “some states have expressed willingness to contribute to this joint effort.”

 A spokesperson for the President of the EC was quoted as saying that “states must now show solidarity and the people on board must be disembarked safely and without further delay.”

ROME – Two journalists from L’Espresso were threatened and attacked by members of various neo-fascist groups as they reported on a memorial service held for the Acca Larentia killings, Il Fatto Quotidiano reports.

 Federico Marconi and photographer Paolo Marchetti reportedly found themselves surrounded by members of Avanguardia Nazionale, Forza Nuova and Fiamme Nere as they attempted to discreetly cover the memorial at the Verano cemetery in Rome.

ROME – Three teachers in a kindergarten on the outskirts of the Eternal City have been arrested over the alleged abuse of children at the school, police sources report on Tuesday.

 The teachers, alongside a female assistant, allegedly physically and verbally abused children between the ages of three and five in a school in the region of Ariccia.

 Video footage collected by the Carabiniere seems to show the four individuals, aged between 55 and 65 years old, striking the children over the head and verbally insulting them.

ROME: The UN High Commission for Refugees, the UN refugee relief agency, has raised its concerns over the safety of vulnerable people from Syria, Yemen and Palestine stranded at the southern border of Algeria with Niger. UNHCR was informed of a group of about 120 Syrians, Palestinians and Yemenis who, after a period of detention in the center of Tamanrasset in southern Algeria, were transferred to an area near the Guezzam border crossing on Dec. 26.

 ROME -- The ECB has decided that, as of Jan. 27 as many as 17 of the 19 national central banks in the euro area will no longer issue 500 banknotes, officials say. In order to ensure a smooth transition and for logistical reasons, the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank will continue issuing the notes until April 26.
