MILAN – Lombardy has become the first Italian region to allow humans to be buried alongside their furry friends.

 The law, approved 41 votes to 29, means man and his best friend – dog, cat or other pet – can continue their special relationship into the afterlife. 

“Today, for the first time in our country, a regional law seals the bond of eternal love between human beings and their four-legged friends,” said leader of Forza Italia Gianluca Comazzi, whose amendment to the bill was approved by Lombardy’s Health Commission on Wednesday.

ROME – Tuesday morning at around 8.00 a.m., a fire triggered the evacuation and closure of the city’s Ciampino airport.

 Firefighters intervened immediately, while Aeroporti di Roma (ADR), which manages the airport, explained that “due to the presence of smoke coming from a cavity in the basement below the Schengen area, the Ciampino terminal was evacuated as a precautionary measure.”

 “Neither passengers nor airport infrastructure were affected,” the company added.

MILAN – On the opening day of Milan Fashion Week (MFW), three supporters of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) disguised themselves as “Death” and dragged furs through the city’s Piazza del Duomo, brandishing scythes with the words “Fur is dead.”

This action followed a letter from the organisation, signed by Italian model and actress Elisabetta Canalis, addressed to the National Chamber of Italian Fashion with a request to ban fur from the event.

MILAN - The universities of Bocconi and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) have launched a Double Degree program in European and International Public Policy and Politics, delivered by world-leading experts in public policy and politics. 

 The two-year course will allow the 15 chosen high–calibre candidates to study in two of the most prestigious universities in Europe. LSE Director Minouche Shafik launched the degree alongside Bocconi University President Mario Monti.

FLORENCE – The parents of former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi have been placed under house arrest following a fraud investigation.

 Tiziano Renzi and Laura Bovoli are facing accusations of fraudulent bankruptcy after two co-operative businesses collapsed and the issuing of false invoices.

 According to Italian media, the pair was put under house arrest to avoid the destruction or manipulation of evidence.

ABU DHABI – Leonardo and Abu Dhabi Ship Building signed Monday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance their collaboration on advanced naval capabilities and services. The two companies will build on years of positive partnership for the development of UAE’s naval sector.

 Under the new MoU, Abu Dhabi Ship Building and Leonardo will jointly work to create a Combat Management System (CMS) Integration Laboratory capable of testing, maintaining and evolving the software of Leonardo’s CMS system operational on more than 20 of the UAE Navy’s ships.

ROME – Members of Italy’s 5-Star Movement (M5S) have voted in favour of parliamentary immunity for League Leader Matteo Salvini, in a poll held on the M5S online platform Rousseau on Monday.

 According to M5S’s online blog, 59 per cent voted to block a kidnapping trial against Mr Salvini, who is being investigated by Sicilian prosecutors for preventing a coastguard ship with some 150 migrants on board from landing in Sicily last year.
 Mr Salvini thanked M5S leader and fellow Deputy Premier Luigi Di Maio for behaving in a "fair" way.

ROME - The Italian National Press Federation (FNSI) announced their solidarity with the Jewish community affected and offended by the resurgence of anti-Semitism that took place in Paris and in Italy.

 Raffaele Lorusso and Giuseppe Giulietti, general secretary and president of the FNSI, released a statement urging “each citizen and journalist to react firmly and to honor values ​​of respect for the dignity and differences that underlie the European Treaties, the Constitution and professional deontology.”
