ROME - Riots in Italy’s capital involving neo-fascist political parties have led authorities to drive a group of Roma people out of a homeless shelter and find alternative solutions, Campidoglio sources has said. 

 The riots, spearheaded by residents of Rome’s Torre Maura suburb, came to a head Tuesday evening as circa 300 took to the streets to rally against the arrival of Roma people to the area.

ROME - Juventus’ away victory over Cagliari was marred by incidents of racist chanting directed at Blaise Matuidi and teenager Moise Kean as the Bianconeri continued their relentless march to an eighth successive Serie A title in the Sardinian capital. 

 Juventus were leading 1-0 with five minutes to go when Kean slotted home his side’s second to put the game to bed.

ROME – Italian MPs have unanimously approved an amendment to a bill that makes ‘revenge porn’ a crime, political sources said on Tuesday.

 Anyone sharing explicit sexual images or videos without consent faces maximum penalties of six years imprisonment and a fine of 15,000 euros, under the measures.

 Known as Code Red (Codice Rosso), the bill aimed at protecting victims of domestic violence, was approved with 461 votes in favour and none against. 

 The result prompted applause and a standing ovation from the Democratic Party (PD) and the Forza Italia (FI) party.

While the main prize, the coveted scudetto, has been all but won by an imperious Juventus outfit for the eighth successive season, the honour of European football for the coming season hangs finely in the balance.

ROME - Italy’s unemployment rate has risen for the first time since October 2018 and now stands at 10.7 per cent, according to latest figures released by the National Institute of Statistics.

 The statistics showed Italy’s unemployment rate to have risen by 0.1 per cent in February 2019, while the number of people actively searching for a job also rose for the first time in months.

 This latter increase, calculated to be 1.2 per cent or the equivalent of 34,000 people, means that there are now almost 2.8 million Italians out of employment actively looking for a job.

ROME - Napoli punished a poor Roma side as both Milan rivals faltered, consolidating their grip on second place and all but guaranteeing themselves a spot in next year’s Champions League.  

 Napoli had only won one of their previous three matches coming into the game at the Stadio Olimpico, but were quick to shake off any cobwebs as in-form Akradiusz Milik slotted a wonderful volley past Robin Olsen in the Roma net less than two minutes in.

VERONA - Tiziana Drago, a member of the 5 Star Movement (M5S), Friday broke ranks with the official party line to appear at the much criticised right-wing World Congress of Families in Verona.

 Drago’s decision to attend the event directly undermines the M5S whose leader, Luigi DI Maio, has repeatedly decried the event. Di Maio this week stated that the issues the convention stood for fought for “a vision of a medieval world.”

ROME - Italy’s Senate Thursday approved a reform to the contentious law on self-defence by an overwhelming majority in what will be seen as a victory for Matteo Salvini’s League.

 The reform to the law, passed with 201 votes in favour and only 38 against with six abstentions, gives individuals greater agency to defend themselves from situations of imminent danger when authorities cannot be reached in time.

ROME - Female MPs occupied the Italian Chamber of Deputies Thursday in protest against the defeat of an amendment aimed at tackling ‘revenge porn’ on Thursday.

 MPs had convened to discuss a bill on gender rights and violence, named Code Red (Codice Rosso), which aims to give increased protection to women.

 However, an amendment put forward by Laura Boldrini of the Liberi e Uguali party to include in the bill the persecution of revenge porn perpetrators was defeated by 14 votes after the League and 5 Star Movement voted against it.
