ROME - A gas explosion at a building housing the town hall of Rocca di Papa, 25 kilometres southeast of Rome, left at least nine people injured, including mayor Emanuele Crestini, who has extensive burns to the face and arms, ANSA reported Monday.

 The explosion also affected nearby nursery school Leonida Montanari, leaving three children injured. One of them was taken to a hospital with severe injuries, but his life is not in danger, health commissioner Alessio D'Amato said in a statement.

ROME - The European Union has been warned that the proposed introduction of a parallel currency in Italy, so called ‘mini-BOTs’, might be a Trojan horse for the nation’s exit from the euro, a move that could subsequently trigger a eurozone existential crisis.

 Writing for the Financial Times, columnist Wolfgang Münchau warned of the dangers that such a currency could pose if the Italian Chamber of Deputies were to follow through on the outcome of a non-binding vote on the mini-BOTs which saw the plan unanimously supported by all those present.

ROME - Fabio Fognini has become the first Italian men’s tennis player in almost forty years to rank in the world top-10 as he moved above John Isner and Juan Martin del Potro to reach his highest ever career ranking.

 Fognini, who moved up the rankings two places in June and sits in tenth spot, also became the oldest ever player to rank in the top ten for the first time in their career.

TURIN - The Bahamas have sent a team including a former police commissioner turned ambassador to Italy to monitor the Italian investigation into the mysterious deaths of a young Bahamian diplomat and his friend whose corpses were fished out of the river Po last week.

 The nation’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Ellison Greenslade, Ambassador to the United Kingdom and former police official, will lead a team of officials headed to Turin to monitor police progress on the investigation, which has so far been heavily criticised by the Caribbean nation.

ROME - A photo showing two women in a public transport with blood on their faces went viral after Melania Geymonat, 28, used her Facebook account to denounce the brutal attack that her and her girlfriend Chris suffered in London.

 Geymonat wrote about the incident on Wednesday, one week after the attack occurred, and claimed that the couple was a victim of homophobic violence.

ROME – Fifty migrants rescued on Thursday from a tugboat in Maltese waters are being transported by a commercial ship to Pozzallo. The vessel Asso 25 was initially headed to Lampedusa, but changed route during the night and is expected to arrive at the Ragusa port at 2 pm.

 Interior Minister Matteo Salvini did not pose any obstacles to the arrival of the vessel, il Fatto Quotidiano said, and the Pozzallo Harbor Master’s Office is alert to its arrival.
