VENICE – A gondola sank Sunday amid choppy waters in La Serenissima, causing alarm amongst those who saw the incident. But the gondolier, who was alone on the traditional Venetian craft at the time, was rescued by a passing boat, reported La Repubblica.

 The gondola, which belongs to Remiera Francescana, had already capsized and was submerged by the time its driver was rescued from the water between Bacini and the Island of Vignole.

ROME – Deputy Prime Minister Luigi Di Maio has called on Interior Minister Matteo Salvini to report to parliament over alleged plans to use Russian oil money to finance the League in a post on his Facebook page. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has called for clarity on the issue but reiterates his support for Salvini, according to government sources.

VATICAN CITY – The contents of two ossuaries will be examined in the ongoing search for the remains of Vatican schoolgirl Emanuela Orlandi, who mysteriously disappeared some 36 years ago. They may contain the bones of the two princesses who were meant to be in the tombs in the Teutonic cemetery opened last week but found empty as officials searched for Orlandi, according to Vatican sources.

 TRIESTE – Fashion finalists from 15 countries including the UK have converged on Trieste to compete in the 2019 International Talent Support (ITS) design competition dedicated to championing emerging talent in fashion, accessories and jewellery.

 Finalists include rising fashion stars from the UK, the US, Australia, Belgium, China, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Israel, Japan, Peru, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan and Thailand, highlighting the “international propensity of the contest,” organisers said.

ROME – The Catholic community of Sant’Egidio, an international lay organisation based in Rome, has organised parties to keep Rome’s prisoners from loneliness and isolation over the summer months, the community said in a statement.

 There will be a parties at Rome’s large Rebibbia prison and another at the Regina Coeli, Rome’s best known prison which takes its name from its past life as a Catholic convent.

ROME – The row over alleged plans to use Russian oil money to finance the League as part of a secret and illegal deal with the Kremlin has been reignited after Buzzfeed News published a transcript of an apparently incriminating conversation from last year. Interior Minister Matteo Salvini denies taking money from Russia and there is no evidence the deal was actually carried out, according to government sources.
