For the second year running, the pine tree erected next to the colossal Altare Della Patria, in one of the busiest squares in Rome, has been subject to international ridicule.

ZOHR - Italian oil refinery company ENI has produced its first gas from the largest gas field ever found in the Mediterranean, the group officially announced Wednesday. The gas group, owned 30 percent by the Italian State, has had rapid success in the region, reportedly finding 850 billion cubic metres of gas in Zohr, Egypt, under the seabed close to the Suez Canal opening.

LECCE - Deep in the heel of Italy, in this Baroque southern town, there is an Italian Air Force base recognized worldwide for its excellence.

 First established in 1931, it became a strategic base during the second world war for operations over the Balkans and Mediterranean sea in general. After the war, it was designated as a flying training school and as from 1995, the 61st Wing has its headquarters there.

ROME - The American student Amanda Knox, accused, convicted, and then acquitted of murdering her British roommate Meredith Kercher while studying in Perugia, has announced via social media that she will be hosting a talk show in the United States.

 The young woman has become well-known around the world for the controversial case in which she and her Italian then-boyfriend were accused of killing Kercher. News sources came out with sensationalist theories, ranging from sexual play gone wrong to more sadistic guesses, to explain Kercher’s violent death.

TURIN - The Jewish communities of Italy were dismayed as the remains of Victor Emmanuel III, the penultimate monarch of Italy who signed Fascist laws against Jews, were flown from Egypt to be laid to rest in Piedmont Sunday. Emmanuel’s body has been buried beside his wife Elena, recently moved from Montpellier, in their family museum Vicoforte 70 years after his death.
