ROME - The Carabinieri brought 40 people into custody in the provinces of Messina and Ros after warrants were issued at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office for crimes relating to the mafia.
 
 The various charges brought against those in custody range from mafia association, extortion, attempted extortion, robbery, fraud, and assault.
 
 The investigation specifically targeted the Barcelonese clan, operating on the Tyrrhenian side of Messina.

ROME - Italian director, Luca Guadagnino, has received four Oscar nominations for his film, "Call Me By Your Name."

 Guadagnino's film was nominated in the categories for best film, best adapted screenplay, best lead actor (Timothée Chalamet) and best original song for Sufjan Stevens, "Mystery of Love." However, Guadagnino surprisingly missed out on a nomination for best director.

 Results will be announced at the ceremony on Sunday March 4, the same day as Italians go to the polls in national elections.

ROME - Announced Tuesday, Roberto Spada, the alleged mafioso who head butted the RAI journalist on camera, is due to go to trial March 30.

 Spada, alleged member of the Spada clan in Ostia, attacked RAI journalist Daniele Piervincenzi and Edoardo Anselmi on Nov. 7. Spada head butted Piervincenzi, breaking his nose, before beating him with a pipe as he chased the pair away.

ROME - The name of Herbert Kilpin is barely known outside of Italy and, until recently, was almost forgotten in his adopted city of Milan. It was in Lombardy's capital that Kilpin was to found the Milan Foot-ball and Cricket Club in Dec 1899, the global footballing giant known today as AC Milan.

 Kilpin was born in Nottingham in 1870 but moved to Italy in the 1890s to lend expertise in the textile industry. Even before his move, he had a keen interest in all things Italian, even founding a red-shirted youth football team in honour of Giuseppe Garibaldi.

BRUSSELS - The European Parliament has given strong political support to foreign language lecturers fighting to end decades of discrimination in Italian universities. The institution’s petitions committee agreed on Tuesday (23 Jan) to refer the long-running battle to senior Members of European Parliament (MEPs) drawing up the Parliament’s position on the UK’s decision to leave the European Union.

ROME - The international success of Gomorrah surely could not have been anticipated despite the show’s complex characters, excellent dialogue, and Shakespearian levels of brutal tragedy. Perhaps the best marker of the book, and then show’s, potency was the mafia’s desire to gun down the writer Roberto Saviano like something from his own writings, luckily the native Neapolitan escaped unscathed.

ROME - A woman was shot and killed in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood of Naples, Monday night, in a brutal killing bearing the hallmarks of the Camorra clan warfare.

 Annamaria Palmieri, 54, was found with three gunshots to the face, having been ambushed near the house of her son on the outskirts of the city in a region often referred to as the "Bronx." The area has recently scene a resurgence of clan fighting but this is the first Camorra-related killing of 2018 in the city.
