VENICE - No matter what time of year you visit Venice, it is somehow touristy, over-crowded and jaw-droppingly beautiful all at the same time. But if you’re going to visit just once in your life, witness the floating city in all its glory during Carnevale.

 During February 2018, the city will be celebrating until the 14th with the main events featuring over the weekend. Visitors should be prepared to wade through a deep sea of people, with as many as 3 million reported to be visiting the city during Carnevale alone.

ROME – The chief prosecutor in Brescia, Tommaso Buonanno, has been landed in difficulty after Carabinieri investigators announced on Monday that his son had been arrested in connection with an armed robbery in the town of Zogno, in Lombardy.

 Gianmarco Buonanno, 32, is accused of having been one of three men who committed an armed robbery of a “Conad” Supermarket on Wednesday, Jan 31. He was said to have been carrying a machine gun while the gang, all wearing masks, stole 12,000 euros from the store.

ROME - The Margutta Home Gallery, an art and design gallery on Rome’s Via Margutta, will present several works from the series Iconics by Rome based artist Claudia Palmira.  The exhibit will appear Feb. 22 to March 25th, with an opening night reception set for Feb. 22 from 6:30 pm, organisers said.

 Her well known “digital etchings” are the innovative medium the artist uses to realize a new form of iconography, adapting classical works to the new format in combination with works of poetry, together in colorful images, printed on large format acrylic.

ROME – The Italian Senate was leading an appeal to the government of Thailand to prevent the execution of Denis Cavatassi, an Italian national accused in 2011 of hiring a killer to murder his business partner, Luciano Butti, in Phuket.  

 Sig Cavatassi was convicted and sentenced to death in Thailand but has always maintained his innocence and is appealing to the Thai supreme court (cq).

ROME – Italy’s new medical laws that allow for patients to end their own lives have been used for the first time, by a patient suffering from ALS, commonly known as Motor Neurone Syndrome. Patrizia Cocco, was 49 and lived in the Sardinian city of Nuoro.

 Her decision to refuse ventilation at the end of January makes her the first patient to utilise Italy’s “Advance Treatment Provisions” (DAT) that was passed into law in Dec 2017.

ROME – Luigi Di Maio, leader of the Five Star Movement (M5S), accused his centre-left rivals the Democratic Party (PD), of letting those involved in corruption cases run in the March elections, but Matteo Renzi, the PD Secretary hit back by alleging links between M5S and the Spada Clan mafia gang.

 Writing on his blog on Sunday, Di Maio, presented a list of candidates from rival parties who were involved in legal battles. The comments came in response to Renzi’s earlier claim that many of M5S candidates were unpresentable at the upcoming elections.
