ROME – The families of three Italians kidnapped in Mexico have appealed to the Italian government on Monday to apply pressure to local authorities to find their relatives who are said to have been “sold,” according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.   

 Four Mexican police officers have been arrested following the sale of three Italian nationals in the country, though, as yet, those arrested have provided no further information on the whereabouts of the men.

ROME – Matteo Renzi ruled out any possibility of an alliance between the Democratic Party (PD) and the Five Star Movement (M5S), stating that “we would never form a government with extremists,” in a forum at La Stampa newspaper.

 Pressed to explain why he consider M5S extremists, Renzi responded by pondering “are they inside or outside Europe? Are they in favour of mandatory vaccines or not? The reality is… that the positions taken by M5S are profoundly far from what Italy had always known.”

ROME - Vittorio Brumotti and a team of journalists were attacked in Via Costante Girardengo in the Zen quarter of Palermo Sunday afternoon. Brumotti had been investigating drug dealing within the city and how it is managed. This particular neighbourhood profits greatly from drug dealing and consequently Brumotti's presence was not welcomed.

ROME – Italy’s extraordinarily expensive hosting of the Ryder Cup in 2022 is under serious scrutiny, following the accusation that the chosen location for the event, Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, was never stipulated by the European Ryder Cup panel, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano.

 Italy’s bid was announced as the winner in Dec 2015 and will cost an estimated 160 million euros, the majority of which will be funded from public sources. That includes 96 million euro guarantee that was passed by the Senate in 2017.

ROME – Italy’s miserable run in the Six Nations continued as they suffered another defeat in the competition against a lacklustre France at the Orange Velodrome in Marseille, the game ending 34-17.

 The French team’s preparations had been disrupted by events in Scotland after the last round of fixtures two weeks ago.

 VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis appealed Sunday for an end to the “inhuman” bombardment by Syrian forces of the rebel enclave of east Ghouta, saying “one cannot fight evil with another evil.”

 “These days my thoughts often have turned to beloved and martyred Syria , where the war has re-exploded, especially in eastern Ghouta,” the pontiff said dueing his weekly Angelus address in St. Peter’s Square.

ROME – Italy’s media regulation authority, AGCOM, announced that it will seek to clamp down on the publication of secret polls during the 15-day run up to Italy’s elections on March 4.

 Under Italy’s Law 28, passed through Italy’s Parliament in 2000 after heated debate, no polls can be published for the period 15 days prior to the election. It also stipulates a variety of other measures to ensure equal coverage for political parties.
