ROME – The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, was joined by other politicians at the Quirinale to remember the death of the Italian statesman Aldo Moro, who was murdered 40 years ago.

 Mattarella laid a wreath of white roses by the plaque that commemorates the former Prime Minister in Via Caetani – the place where his body was found – before heading to the Quirinale for the rest of the ceremony.

ROME – The FAO in its latest curb on press freedom has banned a reporter from attending a Year of Zayed event to which Italian Insider was invited by the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, disregarding a special request by the Embassy press office that the Insider be allowed to cover the event.

 Embassy spokeswoman Yasmeen Qaraqish asked Mauritanian FAO cabinet attaché Alkhafaji Raschad to allow Insider Archie Farquharson to cover the event after the FAO refused Mr Farquharson’s request for accreditation without giving any reason for the decision.

ROME – The Erasmus+ National Agency organised two events in the Italian capital to celebrate Europe Day and the Erasmus+ Programme.

 On 8 May, an orchestra composed of 50 Erasmus students from Italian music institutes performed an ensemble conducted by Maestro Elio Orciuolo. 

 The concert was free of charge and took place at the Brancaccio Theatre (Via Merulana 244) at 19:00. The Minister of Education, Valeria Fedeli, reportedly attended the concert.

ROME – Hundreds of university lecturers around Italy are being investigated and prosecuted for evading their duties and pursuing an illegal second job.

 Compensation claims totalling a whopping 42 million euros have already been demanded from 172 professors.

 This comes after they reportedly violated their employment agreement by not guaranteeing 350 hours or work per year, instead falling into the part-time job category of 250 hours of work per year.

ROME - A single-decker bus exploded into flames on the popular and crowded Via del Tritone on Tuesday, causing panic and chaos.

 Three fire brigade teams tackled the dramatic blaze, while police cordoned off the area from tourists and passers-by.

 Residents in the vicinity were warned to close their windows because of the toxic fumes released by the fire. A dense black trail of smoke spread in the surrounding area and could be seen from a significant distance.

ROME – An investigation is underway after two men, belonging to the Mafiosi Casamonica and Di Silvio families, attacked a handicapped woman and a 39-year-old barman in Via Barzilai.

 Although the event occurred on 1 April, prosecutors have since launched an inquiry and are examining acts of violence, threats and damage.

 Video footage was also published by La Repubblica on Monday. It shows Antonio Casamonica and his cousin Alfredo Di Silvio entering the bar located in the south-eastern part of the capital and ordering to be served first.

 OL PEJETA, Kenya - After three decades of being away I am lured back to the place where I grew up, Kenya. Curiosity about the 90,000 acre wildlife conservancy called Ol Pejeta, that lies at the foot of Mount Kenya, is the hook that brings me back. Ol Pejeta has won many conservation awards, is currently operating a white Rhino IVF project and even has a chimpanzee sanctuary, so how can it not be great?

 I am intrigued by the story of Sudan, the last male white northern Rhino, and am keen to visit before Sudan is gone, and before I myself might be too old!
