ROME – Members of Italy’s 5-Star Movement (M5S) have voted in favour of parliamentary immunity for League Leader Matteo Salvini, in a poll held on the M5S online platform Rousseau on Monday.

 According to M5S’s online blog, 59 per cent voted to block a kidnapping trial against Mr Salvini, who is being investigated by Sicilian prosecutors for preventing a coastguard ship with some 150 migrants on board from landing in Sicily last year.
 Mr Salvini thanked M5S leader and fellow Deputy Premier Luigi Di Maio for behaving in a "fair" way.

ROME - The Italian National Press Federation (FNSI) announced their solidarity with the Jewish community affected and offended by the resurgence of anti-Semitism that took place in Paris and in Italy.

 Raffaele Lorusso and Giuseppe Giulietti, general secretary and president of the FNSI, released a statement urging “each citizen and journalist to react firmly and to honor values ​​of respect for the dignity and differences that underlie the European Treaties, the Constitution and professional deontology.”

ROME – One in three songs played on national and private radio stations in Italy must be Italian, said League party MP Alessandro Morelli, who has submitted a bill in the Lower House that would make it compulsory.

 The current chair of the Lower House transport committee and ex director of the League party’s radio station, Radio Padania, also wants another 10 percent of airtime devoted to emerging Italian artists and small record labels.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis has decided to defrock 88-year-old American ex-cardinal Theodore McCarrick following the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith’s final decree of the trial that declared McCarrick as guilty of paedophilia.

 The decision comes days ahead of the upcoming Summit on the Protection of Minors that the Vatican is set to host.

COSENZA - Francesco Strangio, a fugitive of the Calabrian organised crime group 'Ndrangheta, was arrested Thursday night by the police force of Reggio Calabria and Cosenza. He was hiding in a flat on the top floor of a condominium in Rose, a small town in the Cosentino area.

 Strangio now faces a sentence of 14 years in prison for international drug trafficking.

PARIS – Italian bishop Luigi Ventura, papal nuncio to France, is under investigation for sexual assault accusations. The city prosecutor’s office is reviewing a report from a young man who claimed that Ventura “molested a municipal official,” Il Fatto Quotidiano reported, quoting from French newspaper Le Monde.

 The victim is allegedly a young official of the capital’s City Hall. The report claims that during an official ceremony at the Hotel de Ville on Jan. 17, the 74-year-old nuncio repeatedly violated the official.

The Croatian Zivi Zid party, the Polish Kukiz’15 movement, the Finnish movement Liike Nyt and, the Greek party Akkel were the first allies to be announced.
