ROME – Fifty migrants rescued on Thursday from a tugboat in Maltese waters are being transported by a commercial ship to Pozzallo. The vessel Asso 25 was initially headed to Lampedusa, but changed route during the night and is expected to arrive at the Ragusa port at 2 pm.

 Interior Minister Matteo Salvini did not pose any obstacles to the arrival of the vessel, il Fatto Quotidiano said, and the Pozzallo Harbor Master’s Office is alert to its arrival.

ROME – As many as 1,252,148 applications for the ‘citizenship wage’ basic income (reddito di cittadinanza) were presented at the Istituto Nazionale della Previdenza Sociale (INPS) up to May 30.  

 Over 960,000 have already been processed out of a total of one 1,6 million submitted in March and April, of which 674,000 were accepted, 277,000 (26 percent) rejected and are still 9,000 in evidence for further preliminary investigation, il Fatto Quotidiano wrote.

VATICAN CITY – The Vatican Radio will relaunch and inaugurate a weekly radio news bulletin in Latin and a broadcast dedicated to rediscover the Latin language in collaboration with the Latin Letters Office and the Secretariat of State.

 According to Il Messagero, the news bulletin will be called “Hebdomada Papae, notitiae vaticanae latine redditae” (Pope's week, Vatican newsletter in Latin) and will present the Pope’s weekly activities.

ROME – Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Thursday that his government’s ‘citizenship wage’ basic income and ‘quota 100’ pension reform will remain untouched despite the European Commission’s intentions to implement the infringement procedure against Italy.

 The Commission stated in a letter that the procedure “is justified” by the country’s economic recession and inability to comply with the debt rule, adding that the rule “was not respected” in 2018 and 2019, and would not be respected in 2020.

ROME - The Rome Savoyards drew an impressive season of theatre and entertainment to a close with a rip-roaring interpretation of Rick Abbot’s “Play On!”, a farcical take on the amateurish realms of third-rate acting and play-writing. The play, which centres around the production of an internal play, suffers from a script which was at times as poor as the production it sets out to mock, but the Savoyards cast was masterful in capturing the risible world of underprepared and under-talented acting.

ROME - English stage, screen and television actress Vanessa Redgrave is set to receive a Globo d’Oro for a glittering career that spans over 60 years when judges from the Rome Foreign Press Association host the 59th edition of the annual Italian film award in June.

 Redgrave’s achievement was revealed by the adjudicators as they announced the nominees for this year’s event which saw Italian film “Il traditore” follow up its impressive debut at the Cannes Film Festival with four nominations, amongst which best screenplay and best actor.
