It is hard not to wonder, though, what has been lost in his artistic, de-historicised vision of the ancient building.
GENOA – Arrests were made after it was revealed that one of the companies sub-contracted to demolish the Morandi Bridge, which collapsed last summer, was in the control of the Camorra, reported Il Fatto Quotidiano.
Tecnodem, a demolition company based in Naples, was paid some 100,000 euros for the demolition which began in the last few weeks, but had been prevented from starting work when suspicions arose in May. A man and a woman have been arrested so far.
ROME - A forty-year-old man has been arrested for trying to smuggle drugs that he bought using money given to him by the state as part of Italy’s new Citizenship Income scheme into prison to give to his incarcerated girlfriend.
The man, known as Gino B., was apprehended in Rebibbia after sniffer dogs raised the alarm, police finding large quantities of hashish in the man’s underwear. Gino B. later confessed to wanting to handover the drugs, a birthday present for his girlfriend, as they embraced during visiting hours at the prison in the north-eastern suburb.
ROMA - A heartbroken Francesco Totti has said he will be stepping down from his role as director of AS Roma and leaving the club after 30 years.
“I resign as a Roma executive. I was hoping that this day would never come, [but] instead this ugly and heavy day has arrived,” Totti told press at an Italian Olympic Committee conference. “This is far worse than retiring as a player. Leaving Roma is like dying.”
ROME - Tuscan reds are fast becoming the most loved wines across the world as recent export statistics boast of their strong performance in emerging American and Asian markets.
Research led by the Wine Monitor Nomisma, a leading observatory specialising in wine markets, has revealed that Tuscan DOCG (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) reds have noticeably outperformed competitors, growing substantially in export numbers over the last five years in large part due to the impressive spread of the product into markets beyond EU trading agreements.
ROME – World renowned writer Andrea Camilleri remains on a life-support machine at the Santo Spirito hospital after a heart-attack Monday morning, according to hospital sources. His condition remains critical but stable according to Dr Robert Ricci.
"Obviously he is not conscious," said Dr Ricci in a statement Tuesday. He went on to explain that the heart-attack seems to have been caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure.
TURIN – A carabiniere was killed last night while manning his checkpoint by a drunk motorist in Bergamo, reported Ansa.
Just before 3 a.m., Emanuele Anzini was hit by a car and dragged some fifty-metres down the road from his checkpoint on the via Albisetti in Terno d’Isola. The 41-year-old policeman died at the scene.
MODENA – Amanda Knox last week blamed the media’s portrayal of her as a ‘dirty maneater’ for the way she was treated during her trial, in a tearful speech during her first return to the country since acquittal. She held the media, which had branded her “Foxy Knoxy,” responsible for her initially being found guilty of the 2007 murder of Meredith Kercher.
