ROME - World hunger is rising, with 821 million people – 17 million more than in the previous year – going hungry in 2017, a UN report has revealed on Tuesday.

 It is the third year in a row that hunger in the world has continued to rise, returning to levels from a decade ago.

 The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report, authored by FAO, IFAD, PAM UNICEF and WHO, named conflict, economic slowdown and climate change as the key forces behind rising global hunger levels.

MILAN – A vase containing hundreds of golden coins dating to the Roman Empire has been found during private excavation works in Como, official sources said today.

 Alberto Bonsoli, minister for cultural heritage, during a press conference following the discovery said, “this is a major breakthrough, it will make history. We are not yet ready to comprehend it, but this is a message from our ancestors.”

VATICAN – Pope Francis to change at least three cardinals out of the nine that make up the “crown” council (C9), official sources said on Monday.

 Three cardinals of the council are accused of covering up members of the clergy involved in abuses. The Honduran national, Maradiaga, the Chilean, Errazuriz, and Australian George Pell, currently in Australia awaiting trial for a prior abuse issue, will be forced to step down from the C9.

ROME – Interior minister Matteo Salvini has hit back at the UN’s newly appointed High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet for slamming Italy’s treatment of migrants as “inappropriate, unfounded and unjust”, political sources said on Tuesday.

 Just one month after her appointment, the former Chilean president debuted at the 39th Geneva Council with an address entirely focused on the migration issue, promising to set up a taskforce to monitor intolerance towards new arrivals.

HONDURAS - As the trial of eight men charged with the murder of Honduran indigenous leader Berta Cáceres begins, global organisations are calling for “real justice”.

 Global Witness and the Civil Council of Popular and Indigenous Organisations of Honduras (COPINH) – co-founded and led by Ms Cáceres at the time of her death – are calling on the Honduran government to prosecute those who ordered the murder, not just the eight accused of pulling the trigger.

TRIPOLI – A faction of armed rebels has stormed the headquarters of the Libyan National Oil Corporation (Noc) in Tripoli, a local Arab news agency has reported on Monday.

 According to the Arab source, a loud explosion was heard. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack however, according to Dubai based tv Alaan and Dpa news agency, a group of jihadists of the Islamic State may have been the executors. Reports suggest six attackers were killed after a three-hour siege.

 Former League Treasurer Francesco Belsito claims to have left the embattled party with a surplus of 40 million euros, he told Il Fatto Quotidiano.

 “After my resignation in 2012, another 19 million linked to the Bossi elections entered the party coffers, because the repayments were staggered over the years,” Mr Belsito said. “And I imagine that repayments have arrived for later elections. There was money.”

 When asked what happened to the funds, he said – “I think they have been spent. How, I do not know. I don’t want to say that there is anything illegal.”

 The words ‘miraculous’ and ‘wonderful’ are not the first that come to mind when speaking of death. But that’s how actor David Haughton has described the final curtain call of his close friend and collaborator, British choreographer Lindsay Kemp, who mentored artists as diverse as David Bowie and Kate Bush.  

 Haughton takes solace in the knowledge the flamboyant mime artist, who died suddenly at his home in Livorno, aged 80, did not suffer in his final moments.
