 ROME — The alleged rape of a 13-year-old girl by seven Egyptian nationals last week in Catania has reinvigorated right-wing calls for a crackdown on immigration and harsher punishments for sex offenders. “Do not come to me talking about ‘tolerance’ or ‘mistakes,’" deputy prime minister and minister of infrastructure and transport Matteo Salvini wrote in a statement Sunday. “There can be no clemency in the face of horrors like these.”

 ROME -- Giorgia Meloni met with the Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, on Monday in Tokyo to discuss security and trade. The two leaders have said that they look to strengthen economic ties as well as maintain cooperation in defence programmes that will see Italy increase its presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

 Kishida welcomed Meloni’s plan to increase the Italian military presence in the Indo-Pacific region, as Japan looks to counter China’s growing presence in the area and tensions between Taiwan and the mainland rise.

 ROME – More wounded children from Gaza arrived in Italy on Monday, on a ship which docked in the port of La Spezia, the prefecture announced. These 20 children and their families will receive medical treatment in Italian hospitals, after setting sail from Egypt last Wednesday.

 Italy already welcomed 24 Palestinians on Jan. 29 when 11 wounded children and their families arrived in the military airbase of Ciampino, in order to receive treatment in Italian hospitals.

 ROME -- Italy fell short of claiming a major scalp against the World Cup bronze medallists in Rome but showed signs of improvement under Gonzalo Quesada. Having led 17-14 at half-time, England turned the game around shortly after the break through Alex Mitchell’s superb individual try and George Ford’s conversion. The comeback undid much of Italy’s good work and left Gli Azzurri wondering what could have been.

 ROME – Prince Victor Emanuel of Savoy, the scandal-tainted son of the last king of Italy Umberto II, died Saturday in Geneva at age 86, the Royal House of Savoy said. The buccaneering prince who supplemented his royal inheritance by working as an international arms dealer, died “serenely” surrounded by his family.

 Victor Emanuel’s life was marked by scandals, notably his investigation and subsequent acquittal by a French court for shooting and killing a young German man, Dirk Hamer, while the prince was aboard his yacht moored off Corsica.

 ROME - Vittorio Sgarbi has resigned as Junior Minister of Culture, announcing his own departure at “La Ripartenza” event in Milan.

 He told the audience that he resigned “with immediate effect”, saying he “did not want to be Junior Minister.”

 Sgarbi had not previously informed Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of his intention to resign but said he planned tell Meloni “in the next few hours.”

 This comes days after he insulted two journalists on a Rai3 television programme, including saying he would “be happy” if they died in a car crash. He has still not apologised.

 ROME – The Minister of Defence, Guido Crosetto, has confirmed the year-long deployment of an Italian warship “Federico Martinengo” next Sunday off the coast of Djibouti. This is Italy’s contribution to a Greek led plan to allow cargo ships a safe passage through the Red Sea, as Houthi attacks increase.

 The exhibition missile frigate is already deployed in the Red Sea as Italy’s contribution to the European-led “Atalanta” operation against piracy, based off the coast of Somalia.
