Former mob turncoat shot and killed in Naples supermarket car park

Police at the scene of the shooting

ROME – A 66-year-old former informant was shot and killed in a supermarket car park in Naples on Tuesday evening, police said.

Salvatore Coppola, an engineer, was shot in the face outside of a Decò supermarket in the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood.

He was a former criminal turned state informant after being caught up in a police investigation 15 years ago.

The killers and their motives have not yet been identified, though police investigations are underway and are looking back at the case which Coppola was involved in. It is suspected to be a vendetta killing.

Elsewhere in Naples, a 30-year-old man, Gennaro Giappone, was shot and wounded on his left side. He was taken to Moscati hospital; however his condition is not serious. It is believed he was victim of an alleged car robbery in the Giugliano area.
