VICENZA-I did not know what to expect when I arrived at the Palazzo Villa Valmarana ai Nani. I did not imagine I would be sleeping under and next to frescos painted by Giambattista Tiepolo, a master of the late Baroque period, and his son, Giandomenico Tiepolo. Having the whole museum to myself at night seemed an unlikely reality, but that is what I experienced. I had a chance to wander seven heavily frescoed rooms long after closing hours when I was the only one in the Foresteria (“guest house” in Italian).
ROME - Antonino Pizzolato, a two-time Olympic medalist in weightlifting, is currently on trial for aggravated group sexual violence. The charges stem from an incident on July 22, 2022, when Pizzolato and three friends are accused of raping a 27-year-old Finnish tourist in a residence on the Trapani seafront, according to Il Fatto Quotidiano. The victim, who had been drinking, was allegedly left alone by her friends and taken to the residence, where the assault occurred. The violence reportedly stopped only when she tearfully requested to return to her hotel.
ROME - After thousands marched the streets of Rome this weekend in protest of the incessant violence against women, Giorgia Meloni has blamed illegal migrants for femicides.
Meloni, in an exclusive interview for Donna Moderna conducted by Maria Elena Viola, agreed with Minister Valditara’s blame of femicides on immigrants. “Now I will be called a racist,” she began, “but there is a greater larger problem, unfortunately, in cases of sexual violence, by immigrants, especially illegally. PADUA-As the gate opened, I was struck by the centrepiece in the courtyard, a gigantic statue of Hercules which was sculpted by Bartolomeo Ammannati during the sixteenth century. Ammannati, who closely followed the style of Michaelangelo, is also known for his other works such as the Neptune Fountain in the Piazza della Signoria which was commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici. The Hercules statue was commissioned by Marco Mantua Bevavideas, the original owner of the Palazzo and a highly successful Lawyer in Padua during that time period.
ROME - Napoli still lead Atalanta, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and Lazio by only one point after all five teams won three points in match week 13. The perilous proximity of these teams means that it still remains anyone’s title this year.
ROME - Italy won the Davis Cup in 1976 and had to wait 47 years to win it a second time in 2023. That victory signaled the ascendancy of Jannik Sinner who went on to dominate the tennis tour in 2024, taking the Australian Open title and then the US Open. Sinner’s presence gave all of Italy good reason to expect a second consecutive Davis Cup title in 2024. In the absence of Germany’s Alexander Zverev, only Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz figured to have the firepower to contend with Sinner.
ROME - This year marks the 100th anniversary of the death of legendary Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, but according to one expert in an interview with Il Fatto Quotidiano, the centenary celebrations, which finish on Friday, were disappointingly unambitious.
Professor Virgilio Bernardoni is a Puccini enthusiast. He is, amongst other things, a renowned musicologist, lecturer at the University of Bergamo and member of the scientific group dedicated to the study of Puccini's music.
