 ROME-Parts of Italy have been subjected to harsh storms that will continue into the weekend.

 Yesterday, the Island of Elba received 65 millimeters of rain in one hour, causing flooding and evacuations. Elba’s Governor Eugenio Giani released a statement that, “the civil protection system of Tuscany and the firefighters are working to assist the population affected by the storm,” and declared for, “maximum attention and caution.”

 VATICAN CITY- After the Pope’s audience this morning, he has reportedly been taken to the hospital.

 According to the Vatican, he has been hospitalized at the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic for, “necessary diagnostic tests to continue the treatment of Bronchitis that is still ongoing."

 ROME – Despite being in allegedly ‘high security’ prison wings, some of the most dangerous mafia bosses continue to manage their affairs from inside the prison, according to a new investigation by public prosecutors.

 This is thanks to the telephones that they were given by relatives and who-knows-else, who were able to smuggle them past inspection.

VATICAN CITY - Pope Francis’ continues to battle bronchitis with his ability to speak publicly being severely impacted. 

 The pontiff has had difficulty speaking recently due to his condition and on Wednesday morning he had to stop reading during an audience in the vast Paul VI auditorium. 

 The pope began to read the catechesis in front of pilgrims but then immediately stopped and had to hand over the text to be read by one of his colleagues.

 ROME – After five years, two months and 19 days in prison and 50 million euros, Yorgen Fen, the man accused of paying 150,000 euros to have Maltese journalist and blogger, Daphne Caruana Galizia killed, was released from prison. 

 Caruana Galizia was a journalist who focussed on corruption in Malta in particular, her most famous work was on the Panama Papers in 2016.

 She was killed by a car bomb in October 2017 aged 53.

VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis spoke to military leaders from all the world and implored them not to cultivate a spirit of war. 

 The pontiff, battling the awful bronchitis he contracted recently and amidst the February cold, still displayed an air of determination while he delivered a mass to nearly 30,000 members the armed forces of a range of nationalities in Saint Peter’s Square, in his second Jubilee appointment of the year organized by Monsignor Rino Fisichella.

ROME — Italy's government tried to deflect embarassment after an Israeli tech company cut its ties with Rome for allegedly using military-grade spyware to surveil critics of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. 

 Palazzo Chigi denied wrongdoing.

 WhatsApp announced last week that Paragon Solutions, an Israeli-founded company now owned by an American venture capital firm, had used a sophisticated spyware product called Graphite to target 90 users of the encrypted messaging service.

 Seven of Graphite's targets were Italian, Palazzo Chigi said.
