Heavy rain has caused evacuations in parts of Italy

ROME-Parts of Italy have been subjected to harsh storms that will continue into the weekend.

Yesterday, the Island of Elba received 65 millimeters of rain in one hour, causing flooding and evacuations. Elba’s Governor Eugenio Giani released a statement that, “the civil protection system of Tuscany and the firefighters are working to assist the population affected by the storm,” and declared for, “maximum attention and caution.”

Firefighters in Elba reportedly rescued 28 people stuck in cars due to mud and water. Many families were also saved from flooded homes. A dance school was also evacuated due to floods with 9 students and 3 instructors being rescued.

In the Grossetto region of Orbetello, between 9pm and 4am, 109 millimeters of rain fell which reportedly caused damage to agriculture and disrupted the hydraulic networks. Intense wind and rain also caused two boats in the port of Talamone to capsize.

The intense weather conditions also affected central Italy, causing roads to be closed after a hailstorm in Giglio Campese. In the town the storm caused a historic pine tree to fall and block the entrance to the town. Intense floods also temporarily closed the Aurelia State Road near Santa Marinella.

Along the Roman coast, there was a blackout in Isola Sacra and Focene.

The weather is predicted to move towards Campania. The Civil Protection service has issued a weather alert for a yellow level thunderstorm from 8am today to 8am on February 15. The weather alert affects the entirety of Campania, except for the towns of Alta Irpinian, Sannino, and Tanagro.

Forecasts also predict a cold front coming from Northern Europe that will affect the Central-Northern regions. Heavy rainfalls and snowfalls will also be expected on the Appenine Mountains.
