ROME - A new data set makes the extent of the threat to the Blue Heart of Europe visible: the dam tsunami has started to roll. In the area between Slovenia and Greece, about 2,800 hydropower plants are being planned, 187 are under construction of which more than 1,000 of those (or 37 percent) inside protected areas (118 in national parks, 547 in Natura 2000 areas, the rest inside high level national categories). Since 2015 about 160 - 180 hydropower plants have been constructed in that region.

ROME - Northern League leader, Matteo Salvini, sparked controversy when he said, “I deal with those who are alive, not those who are dead,” while referring to the end of life bill under discussion by Parliament.

 Salvini stated that his party is ready to discuss the issue when it came to the vote, however, there are more pressing issues to attend to before that point. He emphasised that, "more than a good death, I'm concerned about having a good life.”

ROME - The number of couples choosing to wed is rising, but fewer are deciding to reproduce, a new study from ISTAT has concluded. From 2008 to 2016, there have been 100,000 fewer births. The research company have used the most recent figures, and have said that parents with Italian heritage are continuing to conceive less their predecessors.

ROME - The granddaughter of Italy's World War dictator, Alessandra Mussolini, has said that her grandfather Benito, Il Duce, would have easily sorted out the problem of mafia influence in the seaside suburb of Ostia. In a radio interview at the University of Niccolò Cusano, she argued that more police presence is necessary to curb the tide of violence in Ostia following the elections.

ROME - Interior Minister, Marco Miniti, vows to stop Mafia tensions in Ostia escalating into a full blown war in a statement made Monday, “what is happening in Ostia is not tolerable in a democracy.”

 Recent episodes have led authorities to believe that a rival gang is moving into Spada territory. Two masked men “kneecapped” the owner and another worker at a Ostia Pizzeria Thursday. Accounts from the scene tell of how two men came into the Pizzeria and beat the workers on the legs before escaping into the night on a scooter.

ROME - Italian director, Corrado Franco, wrote an open letter to President Donald Trump after seeing the homeless situation in America while in Los Angeles during the lead up to the Oscars. Franco directed the documentary film AL DI QUA, “Life here,” centered around the homeless of Turin that has been submitted for an academy award.
