ROME -- Two animal rights activists were arrested on Wednesday morning after peacefully protesting against bullfighting during the Pope Francis’s weekly general audience in Rome’s St Peter’s Square, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has confirmed.
ROME -- Two British lecturers have lodged an application in the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg seeking damages of 352,450 euros against Italy for violations of a fair trial and a trial within reasonable time in a wage discrimination case, the Association of Foreign Lecturers in Italy (ALLSI) has said.
ROME -- An Italian delivery driver, Domenico Autiero, has been killed in Castellammare di Stabia after his motorbike allegedly was hit by an SUV driven by an English tourist in the left-hand lane instead of the right as required on the continent, police said Wednesday. The public prosecutor’s office of Torre Annunziata has opened an investigation into vehicular homicide.
ROME -- Zak Chelli lost his British and Commonwealth Super-Middleweight Championship belts to mandatory challenger Callum Simpson this past weekend.
Chelli, who has strong Italian roots, travelled to Barnsley, England, Simpson's hometown, for the August 3rd encounter.
Things went tough for Chelli from the beginning. An overhand right rocked Chelli late in the first round which somewhat spoiled the strong start to the fight he had. Chelli didn't go down and was trading at the bell, but it set the tone for what was to come.
ROME -- Rana Reider, the coach of Italian sprinter Marcell Jacobs, has had his accreditation removed by the Canadian Olympic Committee over safeguarding concerns. Reider’s lawyer, Ryan Stevens, has criticised the decision.
Three women have reportedly filed lawsuits against the Canadian trainer, who also coaches sprinter Andre De Grasse, in Florida. Among the complaints are references to sexual and emotional abuse, along with sexual and verbal harassment.

ROME -- Five Italian tourists have been injured after a small explosion on a motorboat which was taking them to the Greek island of Rhodes. Port authorities are investigating the incident while the owner of the boat, who was also driving the vehicle, has been detained by Greek police.
The Italians were travelling in the Psaltos region before the small explosion on the vehicle. The tourists then called the Greek coastguard, which intervened along with other private boats in the bay.
ROME -- An Italian tourist has died in Bali after falling from a railing while taking a selfie in the Gajah Mas region of the Indonesian island. The family will now travel to Indonesia to repatriate the Italian's body.
Giancarlo Zicari, a 49-year-old engineer, was on holiday with his partner Ilaria Biagi. It is thought the pair were walking in the Baturiti area when they decided to take a selfie on a ledge overlooking the waterfalls. But the railing they were leaning on collapsed and the pair fell 25 metres.
