British tourist driving SUV on left hand side of Italian road, kills Italian delivery driver

ROME -- An Italian delivery driver, Domenico Autiero, has been killed in Castellammare di Stabia after his motorbike allegedly was hit by an SUV driven by an English tourist in the left-hand lane instead of the right as required on the continent, police said Wednesday. The public prosecutor’s office of Torre Annunziata has opened an investigation into vehicular homicide.
Autiero, 28, was returning from a pizza delivery at around 10 p.m Tuesday night when he was hit by the Jeep Renegade on the viaduct of Castellammare. According to Il Fatto Quotidiano newspaper, the SUV had been hired by English tourists just an hour before and was travelling from Napoli to Sorrento, with the vehicle allegedly being driven in the left-hand lane.
The British driver was not immediately identified.
Unlike in the UK, motorists drive on the right-hand side in Italy, as stated by the Italian Highway Code. Autiero was unable to avoid the Jeep and died almost immediately from the hit. Italy has one of the worst records for deaths on the roads in the European Union though most are caused by speeding Italian drivers.
Emergency services arrived on the scene shortly after but the Italian was no longer breathing, with medical attention unable to revive signs of life. The 28-year-old’s body has been transferred to the morgue in Castellammare di Stabia’s cemetery with autopsy results yet to be revealed.
