Italian tourist dies in Bali after taking selfie in tragic railing collapse

Emergency services were unable to bring Zicari back to life

ROME -- An Italian tourist has died in Bali after falling from a railing while taking a selfie in the Gajah Mas region of the Indonesian island. The family will now travel to Indonesia to repatriate the Italian's body.

Giancarlo Zicari, a 49-year-old engineer, was on holiday with his partner Ilaria Biagi. It is thought the pair were walking in the Baturiti area when they decided to take a selfie on a ledge overlooking the waterfalls. But the railing they were leaning on collapsed and the pair fell 25 metres.

Biagi, who was injured and reportedly unconscious for around an hour, woke up to find Zicari without signs of life and climbed back up to the viewpoint to call for help.

Emergency services took Zicari to the Baturiti Health Center in Tabanan for urgent medical care but were unable to bring the Italian back to life.

Zicari, who grew up in Pisa, was an engineer working for the aeronautical company Alenia in Rome. He has been described by friends and family as a kind man who was well-loved by those around him.
