 ROME – The evacuation of Afghanistan in 2021 was one of the largest airlift operations in history, which saw the withdrawal of over 122,000 foreign nationals from Kabul in 11 days. After 20 years of protecting the NATO-backed Islamic Republic, America and its allies conceded the country to the Taliban. Forever engrained in the minds of many are the images of Kabul airport on that last day of departure – images in which Afghan people cling to the wings of US aircraft preparing for take-off.

 ROME - Tensions are rising at the University of Messina as the anonymity policy for their examinations may have have been violated last July. 

 Paolo Todaro, member of the Academic Senate, has questioned authorities at the university after it was discovered that the results document from an exam had grades published without names but in alphabetical order. 

 Of course, this format necessitates the names of candidates being known, and thus calls into question not only the supposed anonymity policy of the exam in question, but also that of any preceeding assessments.

 ROME - A NATO soldier based at the Gaeta army base has been allegedly involved in a road incident that killed a 63-year-old woman from Romania called Maria Smical. Smical was killed as she walked home after her night shift at her work on Wednesday in Formia, in the province of Latina. The alleged 42-year-old NATO soldier was driving an Audi TT and failed to stop to help after the incident occurred.

 ROME - Francesco Spano, the chief of staff to Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli, has resigned. In his resignation letter, Spano wrote that his reason for resignation was that he felt he was the victim of "unpleasant personal attacks" that do not allow him to "maintain the serenity of thought necessary to fulfil his position."

 ROME – A Toyota factory in Bologna has closed until further notice following the deaths of two workers caught in an explosion on Wednesday. Since then, 850 factory workers have been made redundant, many of whom are now organising large-scale demonstrations protesting the perceived lack of workplace safety in Italy.

 ROME - Emanuele Tufano was shot dead at around 2 a.m. on Thursday in Naples on Corso Umberto. The Police Headquarters in Naples, led by Giovanni Leuci,  have opened up an investigation into the motives behind the attack.

 The police are working to ascertain any links between the murder and the injury of a 16-year-old boy who turned up at Cto hospital slightly after 2 a.m. with gunshot wounds, together with a 14-year-old boy who had several knife wounds.  Il Fatto Quotidiano have reported that thanks medical intervention both boys are in a stable condition.
