American NATO soldier investigated for hit-and-run road accident
ROME - A NATO soldier based at the Gaeta army base has been allegedly involved in a road incident that killed a 63-year-old woman from Romania called Maria Smical. Smical was killed as she walked home after her night shift at her work on Wednesday in Formia, in the province of Latina. The alleged 42-year-old NATO soldier was driving an Audi TT and failed to stop to help after the incident occurred.
The body of the woman was discovered on motorway 7, four hours after the incident took place. The solider, according to the carabinieri, first ran over the Romanian woman and then allegedly crashed into another car (a Fiat 500), driven by a 46-year-old woman from Minturno who thankfully only sustained minor injuries.
The NATO soldier, who is a U.S. citizen is now being investigated by the Latina prosecutor’s office for homicide with a vehicle and failing to stop after a road incident, after an autopsy has confirmed that the woman’s death was due to injuries sustained in the crash.
