ROME – A sensational Ronaldo bicycle kick saw Madrid run riot against Juventus in Turin with a 3-0 Champions League victory. Ronaldo had opened Madrid’s account, later rounded off by Marcelo before Dybala was shown red on a dreadful night for the Italian side.

 Well aware of the daunting challenge ahead, the Serie A leaders found it difficult to get a grip of the game. They were immediately pinned back, conceding possession to the Spanish side as Isco began to dominate in a free role.

SAN GIMIGNANO – Local authorities and heritage experts were assessing the damage to the Tuscan city of San Gimignano on Wednesday morning after a 20-metre section of its historic walls collapsed, with the mayor saying that local authorities can no longer be “abandoned” by the government to watch their heritage crumble.

FLORENCE – An autopsy and toxicology tests have been called on Wednesday for the body of a former Italian champion cyclist who was found dead at her home, after a suspected overdose, according to Corriere della Sera.

 Ilaria Rinaldi, 33, was found dead in her apartment in the Tuscan town of Gambassi Terme. Her body was discovered by her father, Domenico, who had become concerned after she failed to appear for an outing in the countryside and wasn’t answering his calls.

ROME – The Italian Foreign Ministry firmly rebutted Israel’s suggestion that African migrants would be relocated to the country on Tuesday, after the latter’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, announced a deal with the United Nations High Commission supposedly opening the door to thousands of expulsions from his country.

 Speaking of the UN deal on Monday, Israel’s prime minister stated that “this agreement will allow the departure of African migrants from Israel towards developed countries like Canada, Germany and Italy.”

VICENZA – Two former US soldiers, husband and wife, were found dead at their home in Pozzoleone. The 44-year-old man was known to have long-suffered from depression and subsequent investigations indicate he took his wife’s life before committing suicide.

 A priest from the US Southern European Task Force (SETAF) raised the alarm yesterday afternoon, concerned by the repeated lack of response from the man, originally from Boston, to his phone calls.

CAGLIARI – In a communal apartment in Cagliari, nine athletes drawn from across Europe have left behind school and family life to train eight hours a day alongside their coaches. This is not, however, one of Italy’s famed football academies, or the next batch of Olympians in waiting. These young men, between the ages of 17 and 20, are here to learn a sport practically unknown to their parents: videogames.

TURIN – France’s minister in charge of overseas customs was forced to deny that Italy’s sovereignty had been violated on Tuesday and called a meeting to address the issue, after a row over customs’ checks at a border town between the two countries escalated into a full scale diplomatic spat. 

 The denial follows an incident at the train station of the border town of Bardonecchia on Friday, where French officers demanded a Nigerian man provide a urine sample on Italian soil, suspecting him of drug trafficking.

  FLORENCE - International film-makers and connoisseurs will descend on the Tuscan city of Prato from May 20 to 23 for the sixth edition of the city’s film festival (PFF) that will showcase the best short films in Italy and abroad.  

 

  Unlike its more famous Venetian counterpart, Prato’s celebration of international cinema grew out of the cultural and visual appetites of the locals.
