 ROME – Princess Ira von Furtsenburg, Italian socialite, actress and model, died on Sunday aged 83, her family announced.

 On April 17, 1940, Virginia Carolina Theresa Pancrazia Galdina zu Furstenburg was born in Rome to Prince Tassilo zu Furstenburg, from noble family originating from southern Germany, and Clara Agnelli. Clara Agnelli was sister to Gianni Agnelli, the head of Fiat, whose name has recently been embroiled in a dynastic feud over inheritance.

 ROME – The Court of Cassation ruled that Tripoli is not a safe port, meaning that handing migrants back to the Libyan coastguards is a crime.

 The Italian Supreme Court upheld the conviction of the captain of Asso 28 who rescued 101 people in the middle of the Mediterranean before handing them back to Libyan coastguards, on the basis he broke the Navigation Code and the Penal Code.

 GENEVA/NEW YORK/ROME – A steep rise in malnutrition among children and pregnant and breastfeeding women in the Gaza strip poses grave threats to their health, according to a comprehensive new analysis released by the Global Nutrition Cluster. 

 As the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip enters its 20th week, food and safe water have become incredibly scarce and diseases are rife, compromising women and children’s nutrition and immunity and resulting in a surge of acute malnutrition.

 ROME – Footballer Sara Gama announced her retirement from international football on Monday. She captained the Italian women’s side from 2014 to 2023, making 139 appearances for the senior team.

 She made her senior debut at age 16 in a match against Ukraine which Italy lost 2-1.

 Gama then captained the Under-19 Italian side to victory in the 2008 European Championship and was awarded Player of the Tournament.

 ROME — Pancrazio Caranno, 42, had whittled a shard of his prison cell’s ceramic toilet bowl into a knife, then stowed the weapon in his rectum. He had talked his way into a face-to-face meeting with Lecce anti-Mafia directorate (DDA) prosecutor Carmen Ruggiero, who coordinated the blitz last July which put Caranno and 21 other alleged members of the Sacra Corona Unità behind bars. He had slipped the knife back into his hands. 

And he would have managed to slit Ruggiero’s throat, Caranno told investigators last week, if he hadn’t been so high.

 ROME – Italy claimed 19 medals at the World Aquatics Championships in Doha, placing them sixth in the medal table. The Italians won three gold medals, ten silver medals and six bronze medals across different disciplines.

 Italy’s first gold came in the form of Giorgio Minisini who won the men’s free solo artistic swimming, after also claiming silver in the technical singles.

 Star swimmer, Simona Quadarella, returned to the podium, winning both the 800m and the 1500m freestyle. In doing so, she qualified for the Paris Olympics later this year.

 ROME – Italians have expressed outrage after Il Sole 24 Ore reported Italians paid 1.535 billion euros in traffic fines in 2023.

 This is an increase of 6.4 percent from last year and an increase of 23.7 percent since 2019. The fines average out to 14.65 euros per capita.
