 TBILISI – Mixed martial artist Ilia Topuria knocked out Alexander Volkanovski in the main event of the Ultimate Fighting Championship at the Honda Center in California to become the new featherweight champion on Saturday.

 Topuria declared himself a UFC world champion in his social media bio for months before he actually became the first Georgian to win a title.

 ROME – Jannik Sinner claimed another victory on Sunday after he won the ATP 500 in Rotterdam.

 Sinner beat Australian Alex de Minaur in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4. 

 The Italian only dropped one set throughout the entire tournament.

 This comes off the back of his victory at the Australian Open. Sinner has won 15 consecutive matches and to some he seems almost unstoppable.

 ROME - Italian President Sergio Mattarella has denounced the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny in northern Russia as "bringing back memories of the darkest times in history." 

 Navalny opposed Putin and had previously tried to run against him in elections. However, he was barred by the Russian Central Election Committee due to previous trumped up convictions of embezzlement.

 In 2020, Navalny was hospitalised and transferred to Berlin after being poisoned by Novichok nerve agent, for which he and the West held Putin responsible.

 ROME – Julian Assange was made an honorary citizen of Rome after the City Council voted on the matter on Thursday.

 The Capitoline Assembly passed the motion with 27 votes for and two against, joining Naples and Reggio Emilia in granting the Wikileaks founder honrary citizenship.

 ROME – Police in Ferrara have carried out 24 searches in relation to 24 men between the ages of 20 and 30 who are accused of racism, violence and praising Nazism, the Ferrara State police said.

 The men had a meal in a restaurant before Christmas where they allegedly praised Hitler, Mussolini, and Nazism. They also distributed leaflets in the restaurant which reiterated their ideology, as well as including threats against the police force.

 VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis ended his General Audience on Ash Wednesday by urging care and prayer for “the war-torn Ukraine, Palestine, and Israel who suffer so much,” and for “intensifying prayer, especially to ask for peace in the world.”

 Francis centered his Wednesday remarks around martyrdom. He recognized first the “many” early martyrs of the Church, then shifted his focus to contemporary martyrs — of whom there are many, he said, “perhaps more than in the early days.”
