 BRINDISI - What was expected to be an ordinary Thursday morning at Brindisi's sleepy Salento Airport soon became one of tumult as the right engine on a Ryanair 737 flight to Turin caught fire. 

 Although the flight was only taxiing before takeoff, all 184 passengers had to be evacuated through the emergency exit slides. With flames visible from the inside of the aircraft, witnesses described the moments of panic and fear as they realised the danger they were in.

 ROME - The Museum of Rome is hosting an exhibition of 93 volumes of St Franciscan literature from the Sacred Convent of Assisi, sponsored by the St Francis Day Foundation and the Italian Academy Foundation, Inc. The exhibition, which seeks to tell the Franciscan way of thinking and life, is running from Oct.2 to Jan.6.

 ROME - Franco Alfieri, the Mayor of Capaccio Paestum (a town in the Campania region) and the President of the Province of Salerno, has been arrested for allegedly awarding public contracts to benefit his own family. Alfieri is a long-time collaborator with Vincenzo De Luca, the President of the Campania Region, who immortalised Alfieri with the nickname “The Fish and Chips King.”

 ROME - Italian Defence Ministry sources are hailing the arrival at last of the first parts of Italy’s long promised SAMP/T missile defence system in Eastern Europe on its way to Ukraine after several months of postponement. The antiaircraft system was reported to be travelling through Poland this Friday, but this only occurs months after Italy promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the defence weapon, said the sources.

 ROME - Napoli have gone to the top of Serie A thanks to goals by Matteo Politano in the 22nd minute, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in the 33rd minute in their match against Monza. The clean sheet also meant that the Partenopei have gone 388 minutes without conceding a goal, following three successive clean sheets - the first time the team has accomplished this since February 2023.
