MILAN – The European Commission (EC) has given the green light to the purchase of Italo-Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori (Italo) by Global Infrastructures Partners (GIP). The US equity fund’s 1.94 billion euro bid to acquire the entire share capital of Italo had been arranged in early Feb following the agreement of the Italian company’s shareholders.

ROME – An Italian Navy helicopter has crashed into the Mediterranean during an overnight “Mare Sicuro” (Safe Sea) training drill, carried out with five crew members. One of the team aboard the SH 212 helicopter died in the tragic operation, whilst the other four were successfully rescued.

 The helicopter had been stationed aboard the Nave Borsini, a ship deployed under the same rescue operation, not far from where the incident took place. Investigations have been launched in order to decipher the reasons behind the helicopter’s unexpected fall, which still remain unknown.

ROME – The M5S were the final party to meet Italian President Sergio Mattarella as government-formation consultations came to a close following two days of discussions. The League have reinforced the possibility of a centre-right government working alongside M5S, whilst declaring that Luigi Di Maio’s party need to stop saying no and find a compromise.

The reports tarnish the League’s image prior to consultations with Italian President Sergio Mattarella over the formation of a new government.

ROME – Casa di Goethe, Rome’s only German museum, will be featuring work by Austrian artist Robert Gschwantner on May 30 to Oct 23. The exhibition, “Grand Tour in Objects and Images” (Eine Gran Tour in Bildern und Objekten), will focus on Italian water landscapes that have been forced to assume particular shapes or forms as a result of human activity throughout the years.

ROME – Two unfortunate own goals cost the Italian side dearly as Barcelona took firm control of their Champions League tie with a 4-1 victory at the Nou Camp. Edin Dzeko was able to claw one back, but a late goal from Luis Suarez leaves Roma with plenty to do in the return leg.

 Roma set out brightly and could easily have taken the lead early on. Dzeko was brought down by Nelson Semedo, having been clipped at the ankles. No penalty, however, was the decision of referee, Danny Makkelie, as the game began to sway in Barcelona’s favour.

ROME – Brother Anthony Freeman’s recent death came as a surprise for all when his body was discovered in his room on Easter Monday. While the doctor called to the scene could not establish the exact time of death, it has been revealed that he found the body’s advanced state of decomposition dubious, along with the rigidity of Freeman’s muscles and his body temperature.

BRSCIA – Previous offender, Cosimo Balsamo, has killed two businessmen in the north of Italy, at separate locations, before escaping and eventually committing suicide. A series of shootings took the lives of Elio Pellizzari and James Nolli, whilst a third man has been left injured.

 Balsamo arrived at an industrial vehicles warehouse in Flero, where Pellizzari was working. He allegedly shouted, “you ruined me” to Pellizzari before shooting the 78-year-old, also wounding a workman in the chaos, and fleeing the scene in a car.

ROME – The relatives of three men from Naples who were allegedly sold by Mexican police officers to a drug cartel have offered a reward of two million pesos for “news” as to the whereabouts of their relatives.

 Back in February the families alleged that Raffaele Russo, 60, his son Antonio, 25, and his nephew, Vincenzo Cimmino, 29, had been sold for the equivalent of 43 euros each to a criminal gang in Mexico, in the notorious Jalisco region.
