   ROME -- Stefano Bronzini, the rector of the University of Bari, has decided to increase his salary, following in the footsteps of the rectors of Bari Polytechnic, Francesco Cupertino, and the University of Lecce, Fabio Pollice. Unlike his counterparts, Bronzini is only taking a 128% raise, compared to 400%, resulting in a total salary of 160,000 euros per year.

RIMINI - She is the new European champion in artistic gymnastics All-Around: the seventeen-year-old from Torre Annunziata conquered the gold medal in the general competition of the 35th European Championship in Rimini; a triumph for the gymnast from the Fiamme Oro Sports Group of the State Police, trained at Brixia by Enrico Casella and discovered by Camilla Ugolini at Ginnastica Civitavecchia.

 ROME – Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open tournament after reporting pain in his right hip during a match against Russian Karen Khachanov, which he won, organisers of the tournament said.

 Sinner was due to play Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter finals however he decided to withdraw from the tournament after cancelling a training session on Wednesday afternoon.

  ROME -- Milan has introduced new plans to tackle wild nightlife, with measures prohibiting the sale of alcohol and more in 12 areas of the city. The new legislation, which was endorsed by the mayor, Giuseppe Sala, will come into place from midnight 3 May until 1 June between the hours of 22:00 and 05:00.

  ROME -- Leaders from both left and right-wing parties have joined together in opposition to the debate on differentiated autonomy. Following the general debate, which ended on Monday in Montecitorio, it is not yet known when the Lega’s flagship reforms will return to the courtroom for a vote on its amendments. In addition to protests and demonstrations, the debate has also prompted a letter of appeal sent to 400 deputies.

  ROME -- Over 50 artists attended this year’s annual Mayday concert in Rome on Wednesday, however, the main star of the show had to be the downpour which continued well into the evening. Due to ongoing maintenance work, the concert was held at the ancient arena of Circo Massimo, instead of the usual Piazza San Giovanni, resulting in a muddy washout.

  ROME -- The Italian government has informed Moscow that they must reverse the decision to place the Russian subsidiaries of Italy’s Ariston, which produces heating systems, under the control of Gazprom. Secretary General Riccardo Guariglia received Russia’s Ambassador to Italy, Alexey Paramonov at the foreign ministry in Rome on Monday. Paramonov was summoned by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Saturday.

 ROME -- A 51 year old woman is seriously ill after being served dishwasher detergent instead of a glass of wine in Milan. The incident took place on via private Carlone in Lorenteggio, with the victim transported to the San Carlo di Milano Hospital for treatment. Police say it is uncertain whether the detergent was alone or mixed with the drink. 

  The owner of the bar, a 54 year old woman, allegedly reused wine bottles, filling them with detergent without changing the labels. She is now under investigation for grievous bodily harm and the bar has been seized by authorities.

  ROME -- Archbishop Luigi Renna has cancelled the mass in memory of Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. The celebration was supposed to take place in the church of Santa Caterina in Catania, a port city on Sicily’s east coast. 

  Renna took the decision to close the church on Sunday afternoon after having learnt of the ceremony through an obituary published online for the 79th anniversary of the death of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Claretta Petacci. The church will remain closed until the end of today.
