  ROME -- The president of the Liguria Region, Giovanni Toti, has been arrested on charges of corruption and placed under house arrest as part of an investigation from the Genoese Anti-Mafia District Administration, and the Guardia di Finanza. According to sources from the Guardia di Finanza, Toti is staying in their barracks in Lungomare Canepa in Genoa, accompanied by his lawyer Stefano Savi.

  VATICAN CITY -- A priest, dressed in the traditional cassock, was arrested on Sunday morning in the Vatican City after security came across his assortment of illegal weapons. Not content with the usual shield of divine protection, Palkovic defended his actions claiming they were for self-defence. Among his arsenal were a compressed air pistol, two knives, a box cutter, and a screwdriver. The discovery was made by metal detectors at 9 a.m. at the gates used to prefilter visitors to Saint Peter’s Square according to media reports.

 NAPLES – First division Napoli is scheming to acquire some more Georgian players to join the club, Il Mattino of Naples newspaper reported Monday. Georgian virtuoso Khvicha Kvaratskhelia spearheaded Napoli’s victory in the Serie A cup in 2023, earning the nickname “Kvaradona” after Naples’ Argentinian legend Diego Maradona. He is seen as a great investment by club managers who paid a mere 10 million euros for him while today he is worth at least 80 million euros, Il Mattino said.

  ROME -- A woman aged 41 has died after falling from a Fly Emotion zipline in Alabaredo San Marco in the Sondrio province. The victim has been named as Ghizlane Moutahir, from the Lecco area. Workers from the Morbegno Mountain Rescue reported that she died on impact, sustaining injuries “not compatible with life”.

BRINDISI - A 46-year-old worker from Latiano died last night following a workplace accident that occurred inside a sugar refinery in Brindisi. According to reports, the man was engaged on behalf of an external company in some maintenance activities on the plant when, for reasons under investigation, the conveyor belt reportedly severed his arm, causing severe bleeding.

   ROME -- Stefano Bronzini, the rector of the University of Bari, has decided to increase his salary, following in the footsteps of the rectors of Bari Polytechnic, Francesco Cupertino, and the University of Lecce, Fabio Pollice. Unlike his counterparts, Bronzini is only taking a 128% raise, compared to 400%, resulting in a total salary of 160,000 euros per year.

 ROME – Jannik Sinner withdrew from the Mutua Madrid Open tournament after reporting pain in his right hip during a match against Russian Karen Khachanov, which he won, organisers of the tournament said.

 Sinner was due to play Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter finals however he decided to withdraw from the tournament after cancelling a training session on Wednesday afternoon.
