Italian air force pilot dies in air show sea crash

Orlandi's Typhoon plunges into the Mediterranean

TERRACINA – An Italian Air Force pilot was killed Sunday when he crashed his Eurofighter Typhoon jet fighter into the sea off this resort town south of Rome during an air show, witnesses said. The flier was identified as Capt. Gabriele Orlandi, 36.

His aircraft plunged into the sea without Orlandi being able to eject, evidently when an aerobatic manouvre went awry. The Air Force said it was opening an inquiry into the cause of the accident.
