Girl, 8, dies after Smart car with four passengers overturns

Emergency services were called by other drivers after a Smart car overturned in Giugliano

ROME -- A girl has died after a Smart car, illegally carrying four passengers, overturned in Giugliano, Campania on Sunday. The driver has been arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, police have said.

The Smart Fortwo vehicle, designed for a driver and a single passenger, was carrying four people when it overturned on Via Domitiana in Giugliano on Sunday. Michelle Volpe, 8, was being held in the passenger seat by her mother and was not wearing a seatbelt when the vehicle overturned and died from the impact of the crash. A 16-year-old girl, who was sat in the boot, remains in hospital with suspected fractures, while her mother is in the same hospital under observation.

Francesco D’Alterio, 47, was reportedly driving the vehicle without insurance or a driving license. He had only come out of prison on Saturday after serving time for theft. His partner, the woman sat in the passenger seat, has also been arrested.

The crash followed another serious road incident on Saturday when two people were killed in Ragusano, Sicily. The two young people, believed to have been aged 22 and 25, were riding an electric scooter when they were hit by a car at around 8 p.m. Both were taken to hospital in critical conditions but later died of trauma injuries.

The driver of the car stopped immediately to call emergency services and is now under investigation by police in Vittoria.
