Girl, 18, dies and 17-year-old injured after scooter crash in Pavia

Police have been investigating at the scene of the crash, with a scarf and item of jewellery also found

ROME -- An 18-year-old girl has died and a 17-year-old girl remains in hospital after a scooter accident in a street on the outskirts of Pavia. Police have said they are not treating the incident as suspicious.

The two girls were injured at around 1:45 in Via Bonomi before emergency services arrived at the scene. It has been reported that the 18-year-old suffered a cardiac arrest on the street after medical crews arrived but, after being taken to the hospital San Matteo di Pavia, she later died. The 17-year-old girl did not suffer serious injuries but remains in hospital under observation.

Initial police investigations have suggested the girls were travelling home together from a party on the scooter when they lost control and crashed. Calls to the emergency services were made by passers-by, including a woman who drove past them in a car and stopped to help. It is believed both girls were responsive and conscious, but the 18-year-old stopped talking and suffered a cardiac arrest.

Police are now investigating how the girls lost control of the scooter, but reportedly spoke to young people in the neighbourhood of the party to establish any facts. Some have suggested that the girls could have been drinking or smoking before the crash happened.

Autopsy results are yet to be revealed but the parents of the 18-year-old, who had been away on holiday, are returning to the country.
