Inter Milan players celebrate league title

ROME – Inter Milan claimed their 20th league title after beating AC Milan in the Derby della Madonnina to seal their first place in Serie A.

Inter Milan beat AC Milan 1-2 on Monday evening, gaining the three points needed to make it mathematically impossible for any other team to win the league, including AC Milan who are currently in second place. Inter are currently on 86 points, while AC Milan have 69 points with five matches left to play.

Francesco Acerbi opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Marcus Thuram put Inter 0-2 up in the 49th minute. Fikayo Tomori scored for Milan in the 80th minute, however the goal was little consolation. In the closing minutes of the match, both teams had players sent off, as Theo Hernandez, Davide Calabria and Denzel Dumfries were all shown red cards.

As the final whistle blew, Inter captain Lautaro Martinez climbed onto the goal while fans set off fireworks in the stadium. Videos on social media showed the team and fans celebrating the league title late into the night, with singing and dancing as well as fans flooding the streets in the centre of Milan.

Inter’s victory following a dominant season marks coach Simone Inzaghi’s first league trophy. Speaking after the match, Inzaghi said “we did something incredible” and that the win is “something that will stay with us”, especially because Milan were the home team in the derby.

Inter last won Serie A in 2021. The 2024 season victory marks their 20th win, meaning their kit will now be embossed with two stars – one star for every 10 league titles. Only Juventus has more title wins with 36, while AC Milan is behind on 19 titles.
