Nephew of mafia boss killed in drive-by shooting
ROME – The nephew of mafia boss Antonio Capriati was shot and killed in Torre a Mare, Bari, police said.
Rafaelle “Lello” Capriati, 39, was shot four times on Monday night in Bari. Three shot were to his head and one to his shoulder.
Investigators believe that only revolver was used, and the killer was most likely on a motorbike.
Lello Capriati had previously been imprisoned and released in August 2022. He had served a 17-year sentence for conspiracy in the murder of Michele Fazio, a 16-year-old who has killed by mistake during a feud between rival mafia clans in 2001.
Videos on social media showed fireworks and celebrations on his release in Bari Vecchia, the area which the Capriati clan control.
He was the son of Sabino Capriati and the nephew of Antonio Capriati. Antonio Capriati is currently serving a life sentence as a result of the "Dolmen" trial, which investigated criminal mafia activity in nothern Bari during the 1980s and 1990s.
The crime is being investigated by the Bari police and coordinated by the district’s anti-mafia directorate. Relatives of the victim have been questioned. It is believed the killing was a mafia vendetta.
