Pope gives World Cup his blessing

ROME – Pope Francis expressed the importance of the football World Cup and sent his wishes to those attending the tournament, which is underway in Qatar. 

 After his beloved home nation of Argentina suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, the pontiff showed great sportsmanship in his general audience on Wednesday morning, saying “I wish to send my best regards to the players, to the supporters and spectators from various continents who are following the football world championship being held in Qatar.”

“May this important event serve as an occasion for the meeting of and harmony between nations, facilitating brotherhood and peace among peoples.”
