Zingaretti steps down amid PD internal fighting

ROME - Italy’s Democratic Party (PD) has been left in turmoil after the sudden announcement that the Secretary, Nicola Zingaretti has resigned.

Though the party is struggling through a period of much internal conflict, the vast majority of members, including Dario Franceschini, Lorenzo Guerini, Maurizio Martina and Francesco Boccia lamented Zingaretti’s decision to step down, with most describing him as a widely liked leader, many even asking him to take his position back.

His decision to leave on Thursday, after two years as leader, came after weeks of criticism by various internal factions of the party. The loyalty shown by Zingaretti, and many other members of the party, towards the former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte drew criticism, as well as the party’s supposed subordination to the 5 Star Movement (M5S). These things were compounded by recent attacks on the party for their lack of women nominated to ministerial positions.

Zingaretti spoke of his “shame” that the party were talking about seats while “a third wave of Covid is exploding in Italy, there is the problem of employment, investments and the necessity above all to rebuild hope for the next generations.” He described what is going on in the party as “guerrilla warfare.”

He continued, “given the target that I am, and for my love for Italy and the party,” he would step down, “to clear up the situation. Now everyone must assume their responsibilities.”

The vice secretary Andrea Orlando has said that “his bitterness is understandable.” He added, “I believe that his choice implies and requests one single response, and we must ask him to rethink his decision. The PD needs a point of reference to face the current challenges. I believe that we must do all that is possible in order that he rethinks.”

M5S’s Vito Crimi and Giuseppe Conte are among those who have expressed regret for his departure.

Il Messaggero have suggested that Stefano Bonaccini may be interested in replacing Zingaretti.
