Last remaining Roman Auschwitz survivor dies

ROME – Lello di Segni, the final survivor of the ‘sweep of Rome’ in 1943, died on Thursday night, his family said
Born on Nov. 4, 1926, di Segni was deported to the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in October 1943, as the Germans swept through Italy’s capital rounding up huge numbers of prisoners.
The camp was liberated in January 1945 by Russian troops, leaving a large number of survivors, including di Segni.
“His death…is a tragedy for the community. That historical memory is now missing,” said Ruth Dureghello, President of the Jewish community of Rome.
