VATICAN CITY -- Pope Francis in Easter Monday Angelus remarks to pilgrims in St Peter's Square said that "only fraternity can guarantee lasting peace, defeat poverty, extinguish tensions and wars, and eradicate corruption and crime." 

 Speaking from a window in the papal apartments in the Apostolic palace, the pontiff also appealed for kidnap victims being held around the world to be released. 

 "There can be no true communion and commitment for the common good and social justice without brotherhood and sharing," the pope told the throng, "only fraternity can guarantee a lasting peace, defeat poverty, extinguish tensions and wars and eradicate corruption and crime."
