Nadine to face Odebrecht investigations

ROME—The former first lady of Peru, Nadine Heredia, will face questioning in relation to the Odebrecht scandal from Chief Prosecutor, Hamilton Castro.
Heredia, who is also being investigated for alleged money laundering offences, will be asked to give information as to her involvement in the awarding of the Southern Gas Pipeline contract to Odebrecht.
The company were found to have used corrupt means during the bidding process and the project has since been scrapped. Odebrecht admitted to having paid nearly $29 million in bribes to Peruvian officials between 2005 and 2014.
The investigation into those involved is ongoing and Heredia is the latest to be formally questioned.
According to initial findings of the investigations, whistleblowers have stated that it was Nadine Heredia who gave the orders that the Brazilian conglomerate should be given the Southern Gas Pipeline contract, El Comercio reports.
The collaborators allege that Heredia had supposedly formed a ‘criminal organisation’ that conspired to benefit Odebrecht.
The anti-corruption prosecutors are also investigating former executive director of Odebrecht, Jorge Barata, as well as other employees of the company for alleged collusion.
The leader of these investigations, Hamilton Castro, will question all those implicated as he attempts to get to the bottom of one of the most important anti-corruption cases in Peru.
The lawyer took over the role in Dec. 2016 and will continue to investigate the details surrounding the relationship between Peruvian officials and the Brazilian conglomerate.
